Apple’s New 4G iPhone: Verizon or AT&T in 2009?

Apple’s New 4G iPhone: Verizon or AT&T in 2009?

By: Alan Ng | May 6, 2009 | 51 Comments

As the world prepares for the 4th generation of Apple iPhone, one of the big questions customers are wondering is, Which network will Apple decide to partner with?

According to this Phonesreview report, Verizon’s Ivan Seidenberg believes that their Verizon Wireless Network has a good chance of handling the new Apple iPhone 4G, thanks to new technology within their network.

The company may have made a mistake with Apple in the past, but they believe their 4G LTE network technology which GSM carriers such as AT&T and CDMA carrier Verizon are running, stands them in good stead for a possible deal with Apple.

Do you think the new iPhone will be available on AT&T or Verizon? Let us know your opinions and reasons why.

Ok well i think its going to stay on ATT because they have a 5 year contract with Apple so i dont think they would break that… And the 3.0 i dont think will be able to support a diff network… So good luck… And also Verizon has to change everything about the phone like they do with all there phones…. The home screen the way you navigate… All that “fun” stufff…

  • Devin P

Not necessarily. While it’s true that Verizon DOES have certain requirements for durability (ie: shock proof, drop tests), with PDA’s they don’t change the function of the units. See the Blackberry Storm, Palm Centro, etc. They all support the developers’ initial programming. This is evident in way that Verizon does developer firmware updates in most of their stores.

Hopefully Apple chooses to utilize Verizon’s EVDO Rev A network, as I’ve heard they’re the only ones that can promise coast-to-coast 4G. Don’t quote me on that one, it comes from an employee.

  • Mtpflyers

FAIL… It’s not the 4th generation of the iPhone… it’s the 3rd… The name 3G is only referring to the network that you did get correct later in the article… With that being said… I have no issues with At&t and my iphone… I had more issues with my phone on Verizon… then again I would love to see the iPhone on the Verizon network!!!

  • Dmo

Well it would actually be the 2nd generation of the iPhone because the 3G was originally announced as iPhone 1.2 and this one is being announced as iPhone 2.0

  • sarah

Actually no..it isn’t the second generation or iPhone 2.0. If you pay attention it is the iPhone 3.0 because it has the new 3.0 operating system. It is just a “newer” updated version of the iPhone 3G.

  • Fred

OMG, your ment to disucssing the network provider NOT the version of the ipone, who give a sh*t.

  • Drew

“The name 3G is only referring to the network that you did get correct later in the article…”

You’re right, and 4G is the newest, fastest network. Verizon’s got the biggest one so far. Hence the iPhone 4G.

  • nick

personally i think its highly doubtful that additional networks will be supported. ATT is loving this whole thing way too much to let someone else have a piece of the pie. As for apple…as always: great product, horrible policy. They signed a deal with the devil, and now they are stuck.

I’d say ATT. but hey, no guarantee that ATT wont buy version somehow within the next decade…making this all moot.

  • Frustrated

Persons who want their iPhone to have the correct hardware to handl the new cross provider/device 4g network.

  • nancie

I do. Ignorance is ignorance and there is a big difference between the generation of the phone (currently second generation) and the version of the firmware (currently 3.0 beta 5)

  • trs

no, there was an iPhone 1generation-3, now the 4th iPhone is coming out 4 Verizon mid-June

  • TechGeek101

this is bogus..i think the concept of an iphone 4g is just a spoof that was leaked off a private server. apple’s contract with ATT isnt up until 2011 meaning iphone’s are exclusive to ONLY ATT. June 2009?? Impossible. 3g is a server not a generation. 4g is not a server meaning this is a hoax. People should learn more about networks and servers before they start arguing wrong information. For apple to be compatible with Verizon it has to be on a EV-DO server…4g isnt even possible technology. Don’t get ur hopes up with this 4g idea or even a new iphone for verizon anytime soon…apple signed with ATT and thats it.

  • Hopeful

I just really hope that they bring the iphone to verizon. It is such a hassle for me to switch from verizon to at&t just to get the iphone. I think they should bring it to verizon and see how things go. I also think there are enough people that are waiting for, and wanting the iphone that it will do just fine, if not better, at verizon.

  • Cain

I live in a smaller community. All I can say about AT&T is, LESS bars, in more places.

  • Malloy

Slow down turbo. The “iPhone” may be exclusive to AT&T, but Verizon wouldn’t be getting the “iPhone” until after the contract was up with AT&T was finished. Instead, Business Week (and later the USA Today) are reporting that APPLE might be making an iPhone like device (given the nickname iPhone lite) and another media type device that would utilize wifi for calls and run off of EV-DO. The idea being that the iPhone remains exclusive and Apple gets a larger market share and prepares the way for the next installment of the iPhone. The “iPhone lite” is not the iPhone and the exclusivity contract is for the iPhone not for all of APPLE.

This is all dependent on whether Verizon will even go for it due to the large amount of profit to be gained by the apps for the new device. Currently Apple retains all profits from the sale of apps on the iPhone which equals billions of dollars in revenue and Verizon wants a piece which may cause either side to back away from a potential deal.

Most of AT&T new customer base(1.4 million new customers) switch to AT&T specifically for the iPhone and if(when) Apple goes to Verizon it will be a crippling blow for stockholders of AT&T.

  • sabu

i think apple might try doing a 50 50 parternship with both the networks
But , LG which proclaimed that they made the first touch screen before apple gave there phone the voger and there others first to verizon
Cause AT&T took in iphone in and agrreed with them
so its going to be a tough spot for apple and the 2 networks
apple has to chose the right one but if they pick the wrong one they could have major problems in money and other stuff

  • sabu

well AT&T is geting too powerfully plus since the economy problems
AT&T can possible take Verzion down or it could happen vice verusa
But as i know of it At&T wont let iphone go in the hands of Verzion at all cost
besides apple has a contract with AT&T and if they break it big problems will happen with apple

  • Wofy

Blackberry and verizon are a very good fit. Works well everywhere that counts. iPhone and verizon would be an unstoppable pairing. Hope it happens soon!

  • Karla

well i knooow its going to come out in at&t but i would much likely like it to be with verizon!

  • Steve

I hope that Apple figures out a way to partner with Verizon. To combine the best phone with the best network (at least in Consumer Report’s world, and my area, this is true) would be a game changer. While the original i-phone was pretty pricey, the apps now are so compelling and the price is dropping fast. IF Apple manages to work it out, the combination might evolve just like the cellphone did–move from being a toy of the technically adventurous or well-off, to being in everyone’s pocket. And can’t leave the house without it.

  • Your Mom

I think that all of you are retarded, and it is a question of who is going to get the damn phone, not what generation it is… you all fail!!!

  • Parry

4G could refer to the service or eneration, iPhone, 3G, 3GS, and now 4G, just saying. Also I don’t think this would happen if the contract between Apple and AT&T exists. If anything this will cause AT&T to just put more time and effort into developing their own 4G network.

  • Moises

Actually, At&t contract ends next year, and apple has already been looking for CDMA and LTE engineer’s to desgin the new Iphones (apple is on GSM) also apple originally wanted verizon for the deal, Verizon is the biggest and most reliable netowrk in the country and lastely apple is not happy with At&t service. I promise that verizon will have a new and better Iphone in 2010

  • Moises

Apple’s contract is over next year, look up the information online, apple is already in talks with Verizon. Remeber, Verizon should have gotten the iphone first but the messed up.. Iphone for verizon is comming in 2010

  • Wheel

Omg. People. The 3g is the same as the original iPhone other than the gps and 3g compatibility. That said the 3g is definately the second gen in the iPhone family tree. The 3gs has completely different internals, making it unquestionably the third generation of iPhone. Logically, the next iteration will be the fourth gen. Now get over it.

This was submitted using my third gen iPhone :p

  • Wheel

Nobody has thought to mention what would happen to all the people who switched over to AT&T to get an iPhone or those who upgraded for the newest phone and are locked into a 2year deal. Would apple abandon us and offer their new phone on a differen network where we’ll be subject to early-cancellation fees and credit-check requirements? I certainly hope not. For me AT&T works just fine. The 3gs is acceptably fast (and I’m very impatient), enough so that a small increase in speed hardly seems worth the headache. Allow AT&T some time to update their network abilities and leave it here.

  • Bellagiodude

I think you will see apple with verizon and sprint in the near future. Your customer base expands dramtically when opening up to these carriers. If I were AT&T i would work on the quality of the calls and expand the network.

  • http://blah mt

verizon has coast to coast coverage my service is amazing everywhere

  • http://blah mt

i dunno whats gonna happen but i hope it goes 2 verizon

  • BOB

Shut up and just wait for the phone to come out you idiots !!

  • Jim Cammack

would be nice if it was 50 50, and Version worked… But second residence in Belfair Wa has no Verison. Jim

  • gary

No way Apple allows Iphone to slip away from them. They will do or pay whatever it takes to extend the deal.

  • gary

No way AT&T allows Iphone to slip away from them. They will do or pay whatever it takes to extend the deal. Don\’t hold your breath Verizon users………

  • Greg

A good friend of mine works for ATT as a repairman. He came over a couple weeks ago to my apt. on the northside of Chicago. He took out his brand new 3Gs Iphone and asked me to take a look at it. It actually had 0 bars and said “NO SERVICE”! My Blackberry Storm had all bars glowing! He told me that even on the beach (which is ummmm, out in the open) his phone said “NO SERVICE”. At that moment, I was very happy to be a Verizon customer. He said that Verizon is actually goging to be coming out with the Iphone…but then he said “something like it”. I tried to get more out of him, but that was all I got. Since he works for ATT, I really want to believe him. I will wait in line for however long to get my new Verizon Iphone! Please, please please get the Iphone, Verizon!!! You will make so many people happy…even a few ATT repairmen!

I think that apple would make an incredible amount of money if; they just let the PEOPLE choose what carrier they want, some of us dont want att or verizon, some of us do. But ive had att tmobile and recently verizon. I can say that up to date, tmobile sucks, att is next and verizon is on top now.

  • josh

Verizon and AT&T are both in the process of developing LTE (long term evolution). Also called 4g. It will be used by all major carriers except sprint. Verizon and ATT will stop using the current servers and begin using a faster service. It is only logical that the iphone could work for both providers. In fact the benefit for ATT could be the use of Verizon towers in a roaming fasion. The current contract was extended for only 1 year and is due to expire in 2010. Apple and ATT will keep their current relationship, as stated last week, yet the exclusiveness is due to expire. It must be tempting for apple to offer its phone to 80 million customers.

  • panboy b

    i pick verizon

  • Emir

idk where but i really hope verizon.

  • Kevin

FYI … My Dad works in a high position for alltel/verizon and still works for them. The Iphone WILL be coming to Verizon. I cant say the exact date but it will be somewhere before fall 2010 ive seen one held it and played on it . im not sure of anymore details than that . I always get to test new phones and this one is user friendly and has some new features that impressed me .it also works as a wireless hub for computer connections ..thats all im gonna say !!

  • vzwrep

apple does not have anything with at&t. att said they would offer the phone for apple and that’s it, they wont put there name on it an anyway…they had a 2 year agrement that ended june 29 2008. now they have stuck with at&t for another year but there is alot of talk that they may come to verizon… is it true i guess we will see. also the talk that verizon wont be able to use the phone like it is is stupid, the phone was originally made for verizon, apple did not want a sim. but verizon miss the chance and then they went to at&t. Also the updates will be more often and free..

  • Jae

OMG a VCAST iPhone would S*U*C*K … it would completely destroy what an iPhone is… Why does Verizon insist on pushing that snotty little ragamuffin of an app store onto the successful behemoth that is the iTunes store? And I wouldn’t be surprised if the Verizon iPhone will come with a red-and-black default UI color scheme/theme… ugh no thanks. If that happens, I definetely will have to jailbreak my phone just to get rid of VCAST…

Please remember that Apple will have to make a physically different phone with CDMA transcievers in it to be on Verizon, and it’s not just a simple switch-of-the-SIM-card thing that a lot of people have been heard talking about. The two phones will be physically different, albeit hopefully internal only.

I don’t like AT&T either and would love a Verizon phone but I get the feeling Verizon is going to cripple the iPhone just as much… not in network quality or coverage, but in functionality by forcing it to use VCAST.

  • brian

i don’t believe the IPhone will be going to Verizon. First off, Verizon’s policy is to force their software over the operating system of any phone. The Storm was crippled because of it, yes i do know what i am talking about, i processed alot of returns of the good ole’ Storm. It’s that way with all of Verizon’s phones…i do not see Apple letting any of their products reduced to that. I understand that Motorola’s Android based phone may raise an eyebrow, but that’s it. I kinda agree that perhaps Apple may release something to please Verizon’s loyal few, but it wouldn’t be an IPhone, Verizon missed that ship along time ago, and trust me they’ve been kicking themselves ever since. I say wait and watch how they bungle this Motorola Android phone…they will. Hope i am wrong, but…well we’ll see.

  • brian

One more thing. No one has seen the version that was ment for Verizon. Despite those saying it was intended for Verizon(true), however EVERY must remember this…Verizon was determined to undermind the phone by forcing it’s own operating system on it. That was the Deal breaker, and AT&T does have an exclusivity contract and you can not get around that, also fair to mention that Apple has insisted that it is very happy with AT&T as the carrier for North America. Also i can’t see Apple just going to Verizon and giving up 150.00 per IPhone just to saturate the market, they just wouldnt do that, the proof is already infront of us meaning how many Verizon customers cancelled or just didn’t renew to go to AT&T for the IPhone? Why re-invent the wheel when its turning so well already….

  • Marguskie

Verizon has worse service than AT&T, no questions asked. My Mom can’t even use her Verizon cell phone in her on own home, the calls just disconnect constantly. On the other hand, I can stroll in there on my iPhone for hours, no issues, never have dropped calls. Don’t just make promises and act as if you have adequate information to back them.

  • Sonja

    Mosises,

I have to agree. I have been with verizon since day one over 12 years. I was ready to move to At&T because I LOVE my I touch and the Apple Apps. I wanted to carry around fewer toys. The store manager took me outside and spoke to me with regards to Apple designing a new product for the Verzion network that whould smoke the iPhone 3GS. I’m now seeing this product appears to be the iPhone 4G. Oh God June seems so far away. I’m not pleased with my Droid.

  • Rachel

Well, I personally don’t think Verizon would be the better company for the iPhone. They’re plans suck, who really wants to wait till 9pm to talk for free. And they don’t have an option like AT&T or Sprint, where one can pay for free minutes to start @ 6 or 7 pm. That’s how Verizon gets their customers by having to get a bigger plan with more minutes. So even if they end up getting the new iphone and as much as I would love to have it. I will not become a Verizon customer.

  • robbie

    verizon

  • Chris Allendale

i agree. i believe that the iPhone will stay with at&t. it might just make verizon look bad after they were constantly airing all of these ads that were attacking what could be their product. besides. the iphone is to at&t as the ipod is to itunes. they can’t be separated. plus there are numerous foreign wireless carriers bought out by at&t who carry the iphone. should verizon get it, and at&t lose exclusive rights. hell will break loose. besides the point. verizon sucks. im happy with at&t, i switched from verizon, and never have i lost data except in a tunnel. besides that at&t is the best network ive been with yet.

  • MITCHELL

    KEEEEEEEEP AT&T. THEY'RE THE BEST

  • BlakkGotti

    Well Put..

  • Travis

I really hope the 4g is releases on verizon. I’ve had my 3gs since it came out and i love it but HATE AT&T. Worst service ever i don’t even get service @ my house!! Lol and one time I was paying my bill in the at&t store & lost service!
