What are Bethesda playing at? Apparently, the Broken Steel DLC for the PC version of Fallout 3 is broken already. As explained on the Bethesda forums, the DLC downloads and then throws up an error on the screen.
According to Eurogamer who have tried this themselves, the error reads: “Not a cryptographic message or the cryptographic message is not formatted correctly. (Exception from HRESULT: 0×8009200D).”
Eurogamer also states that there are differences between the reported file-size (510MB) and the file you actually click through to download (471.6MB).
After the problems with The Pitt DLC, you would of thought Bethesda would be keen to avoid any problems this time around. Well, this clearly hasnt been the case.
Are you getting the same error as stated above? Let us know if you are encountering any other problems relating to the Broken Steel DLC pack.

I downloaded the DLC this morning as soon as it was released in my time zone, have spent and entire day trying to get the thing to work. It wont install for me but I have a diffrent error I get HRESULT 0×0800B0003. TO tell you the truth I personally think Bethesda should seriously reconsider jumping into bed with microsoft on the whold GFWL system, not one of the updates has worked. I mean come on the first one Operation Anchorage was unplayable unless the Fallout 3 game was installed on the C drive. It was this reason that why the registry was invented and the fact that microsoft cant even program that into the GFWL system shows how half arsed their mickey mouse operation is. After this update I have decided to call it quits with the GFWL system what a waste of money it has been!
lost 20+ hours on oblivion due to bugs, lost count how many hours on fallout 3 and now after waiting ages for bs (brokensteel not b*** s**t or maybe it is!) that dont work either! i agree with jon, bethesda should just take more time to perfect the games rather than rip us off and waste our time!!!
I found a solution on here :

If you bought and tried to download the DLC before they took it of GFWL , look under My Media, and then History. You’ll see Broken steel and a blue arrow, click on that arrow. It downloads, installs, works fine. Hooray!!!
So guys any update on “fixed” steel yet? I was starting to think it was just my machine that could not download it and i was getting a bit mad :)I have played alot of fallout 3 (with the new patch) and i have yet to encounter some hardcore bugs that screws my gamer over
Could anyone tell me what all this whine is about the bugs in the new patch(s). The only thing was that VATS got black every now and then and you had to aim without seeing the model your aiming at
Thanks alot!
A gamer that dont know shit about comps
I downloaded the Broken Steel dlc and it seemed to go smoothly, although I was not in the room for the last few seconds. Contrary-wise, when I went to play it it was nowhere to be found! Did the error message pop up and then disappear? Any word on a date for the fix on this or if we’ll get credit for being hosed?
This may be like the problem with Operation Anchorage, what drive is windows installed on and what drive is fallout on? if they are not in the same drive there is the chance that the registry entries have not been fixed therefor the game will not recognise the update
They honestly just need to stop using Games for Windows Live.
the problem has been fixed now, and ive been playing for 3 hours without a single crash! good times!
I’m not getting those errors but I am getting errors. The first one I noticed is that the texture for the right hand glove for the hellfire armor is missing. The one other error is that during the Old Olney quest, after entering the destroyed room where you first fight the Enclave soldiers, I go through the next door and it doesn’t stop loading, I waited hours and nothing happened so now I can’t continue Broken Steel
In my case, just launching the game results in a crash. The test pattern comes up and a second later *blink*.
After the initial problem with the download the addition has been “relatively” problem free. Here are the glitches that I’ve noticed:
1.)Difficult to use Dogmeat. The game wants to send him home, and since the Broken Steel Download Instead of the “Let’s go!” or whatever, my only choice is “Goodbye Dogmeat” 2.)The game IS erratic at loading, but not dramatically so, 3.) When exiting the game I ALWAYS get a freeze-frame and have to shut down my computer by turning off the power, although Control, Alt, Delete sometimes works.4.) the new bad guys are sometimes virtually impossible to kill. Have hit a Ghould Reaver 7 or more times with the alien blaster to no good effect 5.) Perhaps not a glitch, but be alert, after you hit level 24 all of the major bad guys become exponentially harder to kill, esp the Deathclaws6.) The weapon Id no.s do not seem to work with keyboard commands. So, if you want to hand Charon a Perforator, it’s your one and only.
On a different note, I wistfully wish that Broken Steel had been a true expansion pack. A new large area of wasteland with settlements, and say five highly populated Enclave bases to clear by plain frontal assault. The use of the occaisional motorcycle would have been great. In other words bring in a lot of the Halo game elements.
Big question, any other great games with controls similar to Fallout 3? I am a horrible typist, and the keyboard directional controls are extremely hard for me. Is a joystick feasable? I used to be a gamer jock but fell out of touch dring the 90’s and never mastered the XBOX type controller.(laugh it up guys, but I’d have kicked your but at arcade game and pinball during the 80’s)
