Fallout 3: PC Broken Steel DLC has error after download

What are Bethesda playing at? Apparently, the Broken Steel DLC for the PC version of Fallout 3 is broken already. As explained on the Bethesda forums, the DLC downloads and then throws up an error on the screen.

According to Eurogamer who have tried this themselves, the error reads: “Not a cryptographic message or the cryptographic message is not formatted correctly. (Exception from HRESULT: 0×8009200D).”

Eurogamer also states that there are differences between the reported file-size (510MB) and the file you actually click through to download (471.6MB).

After the problems with The Pitt DLC, you would of thought Bethesda would be keen to avoid any problems this time around. Well, this clearly hasnt been the case.

Are you getting the same error as stated above? Let us know if you are encountering any other problems relating to the Broken Steel DLC pack.

I’m afraid I’m getting the same error. I tried to download twice so far, even reinstalled Fallout 3 completely thinking that was the problem, no luck.

I’ve been so keen to get this DLC and now I’m just disappointed

  2. Jon says:

Yup. I just downloaded this myself and received the same error message. When will the bugs end already with this game? I would much rather have to wait longer so they could correct their scripting than have errors in downloading the DLC on the release day.

  3. emppuka says:

Same problem here, after I updated GFWL, it doesn’t give the error message but gets stuck while trying to install it..

  4. ronald says:

    Same error here.

  5. Steve says:

Also getting the error, just bought more points to download it too. :/

  6. Jon says:

Don’t buy more points. It turns out Broken Steel has been removed from Marketplace. Hopefully, they’re trying to repair this embarrassment.

  7. Steve says:

    Yup, pulled from the marketplace.

Hopefully I didn’t waste 12.50 to get the points needed to purchase the DLC.

  8. David says:

Ok, well I still see it on the marketplace, don’t know if its fixed.

Also shoot me down in flames here, is the XBOX download the same as the PC one?!?!?

    Thanks in advance

    • Steve says:

Nope, seems the Xbox gamers are playing it right now, with no game breaking bugs. :]

      • David says:

God i’m really beginning to loathe Microsoft, so i shouldn’t download it from the XBox live website??

I think I’ve found another one for Games for Windows website, but seems as though its not available for download.

        Thanks in advance

  9. Jeremy says:

Think that’s bad, VATS has been fundamentally broken since the 1.1 patch was released in JANUARY. Bethesda seems to be devoted to screwing over PC users.

  10. glenn says:

It’s a shame, Bethesda has some pretty good vision for gameplay but they don’t seem to check their code very well. I bought the PC copy just for the DLC’s, since Bethesda sold out anyone who had a PS3. It’s a little frustrating to give so much financial support to a company that still produces a bug-ridden product.

Jesus, it sounds like I’m talking about Microsoft. I guess I should go buy some stock in Bethesda.

    • Elijah says:

Actually, Bethesda is saying it’s GFWL’s fault, since it’s an error code relating to it.
And I bought Fallout for PC for the same reason, and I’m sick of this DLC madness. :(
