Xbox 720 and PS4: Blu-ray might not be the way

An interesting article over at Cinema Blend has discussed the idea of a possible move away from Blu-Ray for the next generation of game consoles. They believe the Xbox 720 and Playstation 4 could introduce holography into their systems and they explain the reasons why.

In their article, they explain that the usage of holography will benefit Sony in the way of cutting costs, while also having it’s advantages for Microsoft.

They also state that a recent NY Times study found out that holographic optical media has the capability to maintain data storage equivalent to 100 standard DVDs.

Heres the important information that CinemaBlend explain:

”Holographic Optical Media can be read by Blu-Ray devices but doesn’t have to be limited to Blu-Ray technology. This also means that Sony and Microsoft could potentially build optical drives around the convenience of current and past generation media formats while embracing Holography for the most demanding of next-generation game development on the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4.”

If you’re interested in hearing more, follow the link above. What are your views on holography? Do you think dropping Blu-ray is an ideal solution?

Thats right, ask the group of people who know least about the subject to comment on it. Because thats news worthy, isnt it….

Why exactly game developers need 100x the density of a DVD in order to deliver a game? It’s only been recently that developers have approached the limits of the dual layer dvd format. I don’t see how there will be some quantum leap in the next 2 years whereas they need 500 Gigabytes of storage space for their games. This is just foolish speculation.

It is considerably more likely that you’ll see:
    1) Blu-Ray once again for the PS4 and Blu-Ray or some other proprietary High density DVD format for the Xbox 720.
    2) Direct download to HDD bypassing physical media. 1TB+ 2.5″ drives should be available by 2011. 500GB drives are already available and should be considerably cheaper to mass produce by then.
    3) A combination of the two or option using of either delivery method since broadband penetration is still not 100%.

Considering holographic discs are being designed as an open format, it is possible that Microsoft might go this way unless Sony tosses money at Microsoft to put Blu-ray into their next machine. It would be wise of Sony to do so as it would expand the number of players and royalties for them in the longer term.

Recently Australian scientists have discovered a new type of DVD , using nanotechnology they were able to store 12TB of data on a single DVD disk .Also word has it that Samsung has signed an agreement with the technology’s creators looking towards a commercial release of the product by 2014 .Knowing that Samsung was one of the main contributors of DVD drives for the current Xbox 360 its not hard to imagine that the new Xbox will come with the 12TB super DVD drive.
