PS3′s Killzone 2: Claims of failure

PS3′s Killzone 2: Claims of failure

By: Alan Ng | April 27, 2009 | 37 Comments

An article over at the BadassGamer blog has highlighted possible reasons as to why Killzone 2 on PS3 has ‘failed’. They relate this statement to Sony’s failure to ship a precedented amount of PS3 units after Killzone 2 was released.

This might be some sort of an attempt to bring what was an excellent game down. The article does bring some interesting points with it though. While the game recieved countless positive reviews and is loved by the consumer, Sony themselves might be slightly disappointed with the lack of hardware units sold during Killzone 2′s launch period.

After the recent news over in Japan about PS3 hardware units selling like hotcakes thanks to the FFXIII demo, this brings this issue into perspective.

Read the article in full here and let us know your views on this.

I haven’t played KS2 but don’t doubt it’s a great game but is KS a franchise that will ignite gaming passions like GTA, Halo and Resident Evil? Probably not. $ony are better off pinning their hopes on Gran Turismo.

  • allgameconsoles

    Killzone 2 failed because;

The campaign is only 2.5 hours long. Rip off. Then all you can do is play DEATHMATCH online like all the other games.

Solid shooter but the game has no high points or climax and relies on RE SPAWNING AI as the focus point.

  • Bourne

Wow, the 2 people before me have obviously never ever played kz2.

1.) the campaign is not 2.5 hours long. It’s a minimum of 4. depends on your pace.
2.) Deathmatch is not called Deathmatch. Its called body count. This is your most obvious mistake. Research it before you pretend to know what you’re talking about.
3.) The game is not focussed on AI respawning. The AI is actually intelligent, you have to think to outwit them.

  • Slippy Sloppy

“Wow, the 2 people before me have obviously never ever played kz2.”

Wow Bourne, how did you figure that out? Was it when I said “I haven’t played KS2″?

    Are you a detective?

Killzone 2 isnt a Failure its just not the game that Sony hyped to death. Its ok, its not great its not bad, but considering how long it was in development!! Gureilla should
of had something better than nice lighting & particle effects.
Its just a BOG standard FPS, with no real features or set piece that make it stand out or raise any bars. Shame i had really high hopes for this game but i playd it, finished it traded it. I think sometimes developers have gotta take risks & think outside the norm, we already have a ton of games doing what KZ2 is already doing, its just COD2 but with Space Nazi’s…in space. ya cant keep flogging the same beans.

  • Alan

”COD2 but with Space Nazi’s…in space”

    Haha, nicely put.

  • Kevo

Killzone 2 is the best FPS I’ve played on any console.
    UT3 on the PS3 is a close second. COD4 PS3 third & Halo3 Xbox 360 4th.
I don’t understand why it’s not helped to sell PS3′s the way Sony wanted it to.

It took me just over 6 hours to complete the single player campaign. The multiplayer side of the game is amazing.
The control you have over your own games is perfect, in my opinion.
Every time I play online there are loads of matches going on that are full of folk fragging away. It must be doing well to have so many folk on-line all the time.
I can set up an online game just the way I like it and people will be joining in within minutes.
It’s the first FPS on a console that’s managed to steal my time away from PC gaming (BF2). I love keyboard & mouse and hated the joypad before KZ2. I now find it very easy, almost, to just pick up the pad and play KZ2.

I don’t think KZ2 failed as a great game. In fact I know it didn’t but, it might have failed to sell hardware.

Sony won’t fall to the floor and cry over this.
“They have a plan” ; )…… or so they say!

  • dan

after the 2005 CG-rendered graphics fiasco I think it is reasonable for Guerrilla and Sony to focus this game more as a visual/graphics demonstration than the ultimate FPS. They (and the ps3 itself) made a promise graphically that Sony could not afford to break and KZ2 in respect of graphics I think everyone has agreed that it successfully served the purpose.

in terms of gameplay tho. i played and finished it both single and multiplayer were good but nothing groundbreaking. like many have said. storyline and gameplay pretty much blend and industry-standard. I like how they come out with DLC fairly quickly tho.

    just my opinion..

  • ken

Yeah, it’s COD4…. with better graphics cubed. The atmosphere, the particle effects, the lighting all add to something called “ambiance” which helps set something called a “mood” which adds to a thing called “immersion” (all terms of which you are apparently unaware). Yes Killzone 2 is just a fps. Yes, the single player campaign could have been longer and more climactic. Can one say any different about COD4? or Halos 1-3? Is there an fps that hasn’t had these charges leveled at it?
If COD4 is the baseline for a great fps, then KZ2 easily outpaces it without sweating. Even if one were to say they are basically the same game (understandable if you’re not intimately familiar with them) the larger boards and the pretty lighting and effects gives Kz2 the advantage.
M$’s advertising slush fund will eventually run out. Then we’ll see how many shills still ring the same bells. These people must be being paid off or they’re knee-jerk americrazies to champion a company which repeatedly slaps them in the face with shoddy hardware and run-of-the-mill regurgitated pap game lists.
One company went out on a limb, made a great machine with a .03% fail rate, loses money to get them to us and tries to inspire developers with something powerful and new.
One company slapped a cover on a tweaked home computer and rushed it out the door with documented problems and a 30% fail rate and bought every developer they could especially if they were producing an exclusive for the competition.
    It’s like Stockholm syndrome.

Ken, Ken, whoo whoo, this is a thread about Killzone 2, who said anything about the 360 or MS?, ONE started well with your point, but then ONE began to talk from ONES bottom. Quit the flaming & just talk about what the subject is, there are plenty of other threads that are full of idiot fanboys, I suggest ONE goes there.

  • ken

    @ Hollywooda

I agree and stand corrected. Please accept my apologies for ranting off subject.

Although ONE could argue that the two subjects are very closely related.

  • Hollywooda

@Ken.. How Killzone 2 & 360′s Failure rate are related i’ll never know, but I have no intresting in getting into that conversation. This is about Killzone 2, lets move on aye?.

Problem with Kz2, is it had a mountain to climb to meet expectation. BUT!, it was a mountain that Sony & Guerilla had made themselves. But considering Guerilla have only made 2 games, KZ2 has come along way. I just think had Killzone 2 not had the graphical horsepower it has it would of been given a serious thrashing from gamers & reviews. KZ2′s Graphics & great uses of lighting & effects made a lot of gamers forgive its pretty ordinary gameplay & lack of any real storyline.

  • ken

It is VIDEO game. The root word being videre(latin), or to see. So in my book the visuals carry a lot of weight. I am agreeing about the story and gameplay, by the way. It’s a standard fps… wrapped in way better graphics.

My ocd demands that I state that in my experience, Kz2 bashers are 360 fans. Therein lies the relation.

I thank you for your indulgence of my idiocy.

  • Hollywooda

Fanboys will bash anything that either company makes just to bash it, you cant take that as a rule.

Graphics are important, but (IMO) should never be what you pitch a game on. I found once i’d gotten over the initial WOW! i just found it a boring game, that i only got through, to get through it. It didnt seem to be going anywhere & without a good Storyline like Bioshock i felt nothing driving me to complete it. But then is Killzone 2 a bad game because it lacks depth?… certainly not.

  • ken

    Word.

  • yzzlthtz

    KZ3 is much better.

  • antony

i agree totally with \’hollywooda\’. i played it and soon got bored. although i\’ve not traded it in, the brief time its spent in my house, all it has done is sit on my shelf collecting dust. its definitely no cod4. a lot of bugs to be sorted out before i put it back in my ps3

    psn: antz900

  • Neil

Killzone 2… hmmm I played the campaign once…. And got to like 3rd from highest rank in like 4 days kind of a boring game over all it just doesnt flow like Call of duty or Resistance 2…. Unfortunatly bit of a disappointment

  • Stevo_Style

LOL You obviously HAVEN’T PLAYED KILLZONE 2 and you probaly AINT GOT A PS3. LOL WIT A NAME LIKE “allgameconsoles” people are really going to that u seriously LOL

It took me 15+ hours to finish campaign mode on veteran, veteran being the 2nd highest level. I aint even started elite yet, cuz online is soo sick.

IF YOU REALLY HAVE THE GAME u would know that there are NO DEATH-MATCH but ONLY TEAM DEATH-MATCH n its not even called that, is called BODY COUNT

AND BODY COUNT AINT THE ONLY GAME MODE, they are about 5 different game modes all in 1 MATCH, FORCING YOU 2 USE DIFFERENT TACTICS 4 EACH ONE. Like u may want 2 be a ENGINEER 4 SEARCH & DESTORY so u have the ability 2 set up turrets to defend the target or for CAPTURE & HOLD u mite want 2 choose TACTICIAN to call in air support n 2 set up more spawn areas

    WORTH THE MONEY 9.5/10 – NO CO-OP

Don’t forget that they also put a brainwashing kit in every 360 box that when opened turns xbox owners into mindless Microsoft worshipping zombies that will defend the consoles obvious failures with lines like “yeah, but Microsoft have taken responsibility & their warranty is great”. Hate to say it, but if Microsoft had “taken responsibility” they would have recalled the lot of them & actually provided a proper reliable replacement. Instead they just keep selling a console that’s still way above the industry standard for failure rate. Oh, & the wonderful warranty only covers 2 out of the 3 faults caused by the design of the machine, & if it’s anything else I hope it’s within the first year.

    1. RROD – covered.
    2. E74 – recently taken responsibility for this – how many 360 owners have bought 2nd units as this wasn’t covered before – the’re the ones I feel sorry for.
    3. Disc scratching – nope, still not taking responsibility for this one.

If this were any other product this would have been a recall. If your car was in the shop every 3 months because of a design fault, you wouldn’t care how good the warranty was. If your Sony Bravia TV kept failing every 9 months, you’d kick up a stink. It’s like the stupid leading the blind & stupid.

  • hollywooda

Kaden101!!!.. this is a thread about Killzone 2, not the 360 or MS, stick to the subject matter & stop “Cutting & Pasting” your worth dribble about MS, Nobody cares what you think about the console, i didn’t come here to read that!, i came discuss a game with like minded people.. If u’ve got an opinion on Killzone 2?, lets hear it, other wise kindly move along…. or not so kindly f**k off.

    Thank you.

  • ken

Reeeowwwr!!! fssssst! What are you, a moderator? Why all the h8 with slightly off subject rants? Fanboy? Just wondering. You jump quick and hard on anyone off topic. Who’s paying you four bucks an hour to babysit here? Do you get fridge privileges? Can I have a hot pocket or did they count them? Can you let loonies rant?
Arguably, m$ is a large part of sony’s having a harder time than they could/should developing stand out games for this machine, which relates directly to the quality of KZ2. Connect the dots? It’s the great Oz!
    ONE could chill out.

  • hollywooda

If you wanna keep going over the same old ground then fine, i personal don’t care what MS do, i like games from all console. I own a Wii PS3 & 360, I like to discuss games not what company did what to who & how the dots connect!.
I thought this was a thread about Killzone 2 being called a Failure, the fanboy in you cant help but attack back with pointless statistics & put downs for another console.
If Killzone 2 was a failure (which it obviously isn’t!) then that would be down to Guerrilla how the hell could MS stop them making a game successful?.
I’m just sick of hear the same old arguments, every f**king thread u go on now, on any site regarding any subject always ends up the same old pointless childish flaming war.. Cant people discuss things & have constructive conversations anymore?..

“Yer but yours is only good for Blu-ray”
“yer but yours has got a bad failure rate”
“Yer but yours hasn’t got any good games”

    Jog on..

  • ken

    Thankies.

  • ken

Is this your goat? I think I accidentally got it earlier. All I’m saying is that you’re trying to arbitrate. Why bother? Let em rant…see it, don’t read it and move on. Follow your own advise sort of. Or have a knot tying contest with your own panties, which is the route you seem to have taken. Bitching about other peoples rants is more off subject than the rants themselves.
Get it? Leave it… I bet you can’t. You’re gonna respond to someone. You’re feisty!

  • hollywooda

Thats a point well put Ken, no point, easier to ignore & scroll on….waste of energy & time…

  • Kaden101

    Hey Hollywooda,

What’s with your moderator rant having a go at my typing, & suggesting that I copied & pasted it all. Surely that’s way off subject, & I did no such thing, it was all typed in full by my very own hands, as is this, & this, &…yeah, well I could carry on for, oooh seconds like this.

I was actually carrying on from what Ken & John started on a post earlier before I realised there was a second page of comments, so my bad on that one for putting my comment in the wrong place. I do however, happen to agree with Ken & John in that the PS3 to 360 relationship does matter, & it does seem like the PS3 gets a lot of sh!tty questions asked about it. Has anyone heard the following questions raised about the 360:

Has Halo 3 failed because it looks rubbish compared to Killzone 2?
Has the 360 failed because it breaks down more than a PS3 running Killzone 2?
Has the 360 failed because a DVD can’t hold Killzone 2?

You see how I kept the Killzone 2 angle in there, happy now?

The media/gaming websites tend to be biased against the PS3 no matter what Sony do to improve it (the constant price drop news articles day after day after day after…), & they don’t ask these questions of the 360 because the general view seem to be.

Halo 3 is awesome because it’s the multiplayer that makes it great & xbox live is better than PSN. I still can’t get a straight answer on how it’s better. Cross game chat to loads of spotty teenagers swearing & cursing doesn’t count.

The 360 hasn’t failed because Microsoft is so wonderful & soft & cuddly because they admitted that they cocked up & their warranty is full of rainbows.

DVD is better than Blu-Ray cos it’s faster, & you have to install PS3 games to hard drive. Uh, no, Killzone 2 doesn’t have an install. It’s down to the developer how they work the installation, but as every PS3 has a hard drive, why the hell not.

I’m sorry that you feel like trying to moderate my posts, but to finish off I will say this.

Killzone 2 is awesome, the campaign although unoriginal is visceral & involving, it’s cinematic & explosive. The multiplayer is a gem. You can always find a server, there’s no lag that I’ve noticed, & the action is mental. There’s plenty of experience & upgrade potential with different types of units to try out. I bought this on release day, & still play it online. As for the graphics, they are without equal on any console at present.

  • lou

HELL NO, ITS THE BEST SHOTTER TO DATE, HATERS HAVE TO HAVE SOMTHING TO TALK ABOUT, AS IF XBOX 30 PERCENT FAIL RATE IS NOT ENOUGH

  • Jumblejuice

no I think it was the fact that you think it is spelled Kill Sone. KS2?

  • Slippy Sloppy

Personally, despite Sony’s efforts with their admittedly successful franchises, I really liked Superman Returns and hope they make a sequel rather than reboot.

Oh sorry, have I just drifted off subject to talk about something irrelevant to this discussion?

  • Sev

Erm, I bought the Killzone 2 PS3 bundle the day it was released. Having waited 2 years, it is KILLZONE 2 that finally made me purchase a PS3 and it is a f**king amazing game and probably the best online FPS out right now. Yes, the BEST. I’ve played the multiplayer for 80+ hours and can’t get enough. This is one of the best FPSs this console generation. Kudos to Guerilla and Sony for making such an awesome game. F**K the haters and those pathetic excuse for ‘journalists’ who try to undermine this game in any way they can. Who cares how many copies or consoles KZ2 sold – the critics love it, the fans love it. Too bad for those suckers who are missing out on such an awesome game. F**K them!

Great points. M$ has always been the company that innovates in business tactics, not in innovation or technical quality. Selling duds in massive numbers is their specialty. The 360 is one example, Windows ME and Vista are others.

But I have to say: M$ will not run out of money. They have a guaranteed monopolized source of revenue (their OS business) which will continue whether their OSs are good or bad. They will leverage this to attempt to monopolize will continue whether their OSs are good or bad. They will leverage this to attempt to monopolize other fields (they already tried with internet search) and, most probably, will succeed. It’s difficult to bet against the house and win.

  • aman

the fact is it is a bad game(even though its the game i play most). The developers have made a huge mistakes in the game. The most important is the sensitivity( especially during runnig). when ive stopped holding r3 i think the character should stop.

even though they gave us a ‘hold to iron sight’ they didnt give us a ‘hold to run’ and that is just one of the (oh so many) minor problems.

its little things that make up a game, fail there and the game will come out not very good.

p.s. if you play with a dualshock controller, youll find it much easier and enjoyable.
    (dualshock gives grip people).

nonetheless i like killzone very much but id play cod 4(not cod 5- 4 is better) rather than killzone any day.

last thing: killzone 2 is a gay game ( people who’ve played it know why) if you dont and wanna know go to:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moWlIS3KgJw
yeah, you hit his head then you hit his butt.lol

however it has the best in the graphics(texture, particles, hdr, lighting) in the business but there’s that game coming out from bethesda= brink(killzone 2 graphics in 360 apparently)

    lets wait and watch

  • aman

yeah, it is cod 4 bar the weapons, enjoyment, level up system, campaign(lol) and variety.

of course in that aspect counter strike is cod 4,(however counter strike is pretty close to cod 4).

p.s. i know killzone uses a ‘badges’ level up system, which is very original.(im being sarcastic,of course)

also its not ms who’s advertising cod 4. Frankly i dont remember seeing any xbox ads featuring cod 4, its the publisher who does that and do you want activision’s slush fund tto run out? lol

people if killzone is successful then so is superman 64.

  • el festizio

Killzone 2 sucked because there was no interesting enemies, the whole time you’re shooting soldiers with red eyes, even the final bossfight was soldier with red eyes. The story was horrible and frustrating(American patriotic bullshit). There was nothing extraordinary, except when you ride a big robot but that’s not enough to make it a good game.Enemies keep res pawing and it’s hard for no reason.I would give it a 7/10.
