PS3’s Killzone 2: Claims of failure

An article over at the BadassGamer blog has highlighted possible reasons as to why Killzone 2 on PS3 has ‘failed’. They relate this statement to Sony’s failure to ship a precedented amount of PS3 units after Killzone 2 was released.

This might be some sort of an attempt to bring what was an excellent game down. The article does bring some interesting points with it though. While the game recieved countless positive reviews and is loved by the consumer, Sony themselves might be slightly disappointed with the lack of hardware units sold during Killzone 2’s launch period.

After the recent news over in Japan about PS3 hardware units selling like hotcakes thanks to the FFXIII demo, this brings this issue into perspective.

I haven’t played KS2 but don’t doubt it’s a great game but is KS a franchise that will ignite gaming passions like GTA, Halo and Resident Evil? Probably not. $ony are better off pinning their hopes on Gran Turismo.

  2. allgameconsoles says:

    Killzone 2 failed because;

The campaign is only 2.5 hours long. Rip off. Then all you can do is play DEATHMATCH online like all the other games.

Solid shooter but the game has no high points or climax and relies on RE SPAWNING AI as the focus point.

    • Stevo_Style says:

LOL You obviously HAVEN’T PLAYED KILLZONE 2 and you probaly AINT GOT A PS3. LOL WIT A NAME LIKE “allgameconsoles” people are really going to that u seriously LOL

It took me 15+ hours to finish campaign mode on veteran, veteran being the 2nd highest level. I aint even started elite yet, cuz online is soo sick.

IF YOU REALLY HAVE THE GAME u would know that there are NO DEATH-MATCH but ONLY TEAM DEATH-MATCH n its not even called that, is called BODY COUNT

AND BODY COUNT AINT THE ONLY GAME MODE, they are about 5 different game modes all in 1 MATCH, FORCING YOU 2 USE DIFFERENT TACTICS 4 EACH ONE. Like u may want 2 be a ENGINEER 4 SEARCH & DESTORY so u have the ability 2 set up turrets to defend the target or for CAPTURE & HOLD u mite want 2 choose TACTICIAN to call in air support n 2 set up more spawn areas

      WORTH THE MONEY 9.5/10 – NO CO-OP

  3. Bourne says:

Wow, the 2 people before me have obviously never ever played kz2.

1.) the campaign is not 2.5 hours long. It’s a minimum of 4. depends on your pace.
2.) Deathmatch is not called Deathmatch. Its called body count. This is your most obvious mistake. Research it before you pretend to know what you’re talking about.
3.) The game is not focussed on AI respawning. The AI is actually intelligent, you have to think to outwit them.

  4. Slippy Sloppy says:

“Wow, the 2 people before me have obviously never ever played kz2.”

Wow Bourne, how did you figure that out? Was it when I said “I haven’t played KS2″?

    Are you a detective?

    @ ALL
    Calm down fan boys

  6. Hollywooda says:

Killzone 2 isnt a Failure its just not the game that Sony hyped to death. Its ok, its not great its not bad, but considering how long it was in development!! Gureilla should
of had something better than nice lighting & particle effects.
Its just a BOG standard FPS, with no real features or set piece that make it stand out or raise any bars. Shame i had really high hopes for this game but i playd it, finished it traded it. I think sometimes developers have gotta take risks & think outside the norm, we already have a ton of games doing what KZ2 is already doing, its just COD2 but with Space Nazi’s…in space. ya cant keep flogging the same beans.

”COD2 but with Space Nazi’s…in space”

    Haha, nicely put.

Killzone 2 is the best FPS I’ve played on any console.
    UT3 on the PS3 is a close second. COD4 PS3 third & Halo3 Xbox 360 4th.
I don’t understand why it’s not helped to sell PS3’s the way Sony wanted it to.

It took me just over 6 hours to complete the single player campaign. The multiplayer side of the game is amazing.
The control you have over your own games is perfect, in my opinion.
Every time I play online there are loads of matches going on that are full of folk fragging away. It must be doing well to have so many folk on-line all the time.
I can set up an online game just the way I like it and people will be joining in within minutes.
It’s the first FPS on a console that’s managed to steal my time away from PC gaming (BF2). I love keyboard & mouse and hated the joypad before KZ2. I now find it very easy, almost, to just pick up the pad and play KZ2.

I don’t think KZ2 failed as a great game. In fact I know it didn’t but, it might have failed to sell hardware.

Sony won’t fall to the floor and cry over this.
“They have a plan” ; )…… or so they say!

the fact is it is a bad game(even though its the game i play most). The developers have made a huge mistakes in the game. The most important is the sensitivity( especially during runnig). when ive stopped holding r3 i think the character should stop.

even though they gave us a ‘hold to iron sight’ they didnt give us a ‘hold to run’ and that is just one of the (oh so many) minor problems.

its little things that make up a game, fail there and the game will come out not very good.

p.s. if you play with a dualshock controller, youll find it much easier and enjoyable.
      (dualshock gives grip people).

nonetheless i like killzone very much but id play cod 4(not cod 5- 4 is better) rather than killzone any day.

last thing: killzone 2 is a gay game ( people who’ve played it know why) if you dont and wanna know go to:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moWlIS3KgJw
yeah, you hit his head then you hit his butt.lol

however it has the best in the graphics(texture, particles, hdr, lighting) in the business but there’s that game coming out from bethesda= brink(killzone 2 graphics in 360 apparently)

      lets wait and watch

  9. dan says:

after the 2005 CG-rendered graphics fiasco I think it is reasonable for Guerrilla and Sony to focus this game more as a visual/graphics demonstration than the ultimate FPS. They (and the ps3 itself) made a promise graphically that Sony could not afford to break and KZ2 in respect of graphics I think everyone has agreed that it successfully served the purpose.

in terms of gameplay tho. i played and finished it both single and multiplayer were good but nothing groundbreaking. like many have said. storyline and gameplay pretty much blend and industry-standard. I like how they come out with DLC fairly quickly tho.

    just my opinion..

Yeah, it’s COD4…. with better graphics cubed. The atmosphere, the particle effects, the lighting all add to something called “ambiance” which helps set something called a “mood” which adds to a thing called “immersion” (all terms of which you are apparently unaware). Yes Killzone 2 is just a fps. Yes, the single player campaign could have been longer and more climactic. Can one say any different about COD4? or Halos 1-3? Is there an fps that hasn’t had these charges leveled at it?
If COD4 is the baseline for a great fps, then KZ2 easily outpaces it without sweating. Even if one were to say they are basically the same game (understandable if you’re not intimately familiar with them) the larger boards and the pretty lighting and effects gives Kz2 the advantage.
M$’s advertising slush fund will eventually run out. Then we’ll see how many shills still ring the same bells. These people must be being paid off or they’re knee-jerk americrazies to champion a company which repeatedly slaps them in the face with shoddy hardware and run-of-the-mill regurgitated pap game lists.
One company went out on a limb, made a great machine with a .03% fail rate, loses money to get them to us and tries to inspire developers with something powerful and new.
One company slapped a cover on a tweaked home computer and rushed it out the door with documented problems and a 30% fail rate and bought every developer they could especially if they were producing an exclusive for the competition.
    It’s like Stockholm syndrome.

Great points. M$ has always been the company that innovates in business tactics, not in innovation or technical quality. Selling duds in massive numbers is their specialty. The 360 is one example, Windows ME and Vista are others.

But I have to say: M$ will not run out of money. They have a guaranteed monopolized source of revenue (their OS business) which will continue whether their OSs are good or bad. They will leverage this to attempt to monopolize will continue whether their OSs are good or bad. They will leverage this to attempt to monopolize other fields (they already tried with internet search) and, most probably, will succeed. It’s difficult to bet against the house and win.

    • aman says:

yeah, it is cod 4 bar the weapons, enjoyment, level up system, campaign(lol) and variety.

of course in that aspect counter strike is cod 4,(however counter strike is pretty close to cod 4).

p.s. i know killzone uses a ‘badges’ level up system, which is very original.(im being sarcastic,of course)

also its not ms who’s advertising cod 4. Frankly i dont remember seeing any xbox ads featuring cod 4, its the publisher who does that and do you want activision’s slush fund tto run out? lol

people if killzone is successful then so is superman 64.
