4G iPhone on Verizon: AT&T would have to go first

By: Alan Ng | April 24, 2009 | 31 Comments

With the release of the next iPhone seemingly on the way, or iPhone 4G as it will be more commonly known, it has been suggested that Apple could be willing to bring their iPhone to the Verizon network for a number of reasons.

As reported from PCWorld, Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg said a few things about Apple in a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal. He stated that distribution was a key issue for Apple in the end and one of their main reasons for not choosing to use Verizon’s CDMA network for the iPhone 3G.

He did say though, that Apple would be more likely to work with Verizon with the iPhone 4G as their Verizon Wireless Network follows the same technology standard as AT&T Inc.’s 4G plans.

Two words: HELL YES. Verizon would be a great and smart thing for apple to go to. I want one and yes i understand the iphone can not go to verizon because of the whole cdma thing but once it changes to 4g there is no reason for apple not to go to them. oh i doubt apple will extend their exlusivity to at&t because the iphone can go to t-mobile because they use the same tech as at&t so go Verizon!! lol

As an owner of many apple products (a desktop, laptop & ipods) I would love to own an iPhone… unfortunately I LOVE the awesome service I get with Verizon and refuse to switch carriers b/c of terrible experiences with AT&T/sprint/T mobile services in the past… If Verizon came out with an iPhone I would throw away my blackberry and get one ASAP!! Then I can get away from Microsoft forever!

I think that is the stupid-est idea I’ve ever herd!!! iPhone is made to stay with AT&T! I used to be a verizon customer that paid the fee to get out of the contract because of the pathic as hell service!! iPhone 4G should stay with AT&T. And I don’t understand why people try to copy it. Leave it! It’s apple’s creation.

There is no reason for Iphone to leave AT&T! For all of the customers who left their previous service, that would suck if AT&T doesn’t get the phone. I used to be a a verizon customer that left because of there horrible service!! I hate there network and there is no way that the next iPhone should even try to get to verizon first. If you agree with me, please reply.

  • Clorox is an idiot

Clorox, you change your name slightly and repost an idiotic reply? probly an AT&T employee.

I’m anxious to see the iPhone on Verizon’s award-winning network. Best handset with the best network is a winning combonation.

  • Luis

I think that is a great idea I’ve been wanting an iPhone and recently considered cancelling my service with verizon but I love verizon if the iphone comes to verizon it would be great because they have great service

  • Ken

I think this would be the smartest thing for Verizon, but i dont think verizon would be the only carrier for the iphone 4g, still think AT&T would be a carrier also because the iphone is a phenomenal mobile phone and Verizon has a phenomenal network. The iphone 4g in Verizons hands only would make them too powerful for any competitors.

  • Jeff

I think the Iphone should stay exclusive to AT&T only because I had to become a AT&T member to just have it so why should everyone else get a break and ALL other wireless carries don’t deserve it b/c they suck anyway so why supply them with the best phone when it’s not capable of being used to it’s fullest potential….

  • tk720

VZW gets the iPhone, if ATT can get the Storm.

  • John

I want an iPhone but REFUSE to switch to ATT!

GO VERIZON! PLEASE hurry, the wait is PAINFULL.

My land line experience with ATT sucked!

    NEVER.

  • Jay

I think this could benefit both Apple and Verizon greatly. As a Verizon customer, I hope to see this come true.

  • Crisluv

I absolutely LoVE the iPhone but agree that it should be exclusive to AT&T it’s become like a signature phone…that’s the business world & if u want to have the best phone join us!!!!! I also cracked my screen today so I hope the new one comes out ASAP!!!

  • Kg

Have 2 or 3 networks! iPhone 4g with a choice!

  • ben

Would love it. Give it to others too. The problem with ATT is the network. Had a friend with his iphone in my NYC apartment. No reception. Death Valley also reported from 23rd to 30thiest. If it doesn’t work flawlessly (or nearly flawlessly) in NYC your network isn’t up to par. Give it to Verizon. While you are at it, give it to others too, increase competition.

  • frooo

i think it would be dreadful if the iphone switches to verizon. however, it is inexcusable why iphone can not be with both cell phone companies. a friend of mine owns the LG dare from verizon, while browsing in an AT&T store, i found the same exact phone as the dare but with a different name for at&t customers. i was most definitely sure that it was the dare. a few days later, another friend of mine renewed her contract with at&t. She, also, said that she saw the same phone as the dare and almost bought but did not because our friend owned it.

On the other hand, many iphone 3g owners (including myself) are outrage with the decision that has been made with iphone 3gs trade ups. anyone who bought the iphone 3g during 2009 are granted a discount or an upgrade to the iphone 3gs. how about the buyers from 2008 that are still within warranty and have not even had iphone 3g for a year? why aren\’t eligible for the same discount or upgrade as the buyers within 2009?!

  • aldo

look bitch you know tmoble sucks and at&t is the best coverage worldwide and verizon is tmobile so i know apple would stay with att asshoe

  • Dora Mar

I own two first generation iPhones. I’m fighting constantly with AT&T about the poor quality – and I live in Chicago, a major market. The moment Apple allows for the use of another phone network, will be the moment I upgrade my iPhone equipment.

  • InNout

Gosh, the Storm REALLY is one of those high-tech phone wannabees. I have several friends using it, and it keeps crashing, freezing and updating for unknown reasons. Not to talk about the speed when opening applications. The iPhone (esp. the 3GS) is way faster and more reliable than any Blackberry, period.

  • Jerr bear

    I like you lol

  • the resaercher

Anyone who thinks at&t has great coverage has never looked at their coverage map or does not travel. I go to europe and asia all the time and back when i had at&t with my i phone it worked great when i was on the network but i was always losing service so i switched back to verizon. and now i have a useless iphone but at least i can finish a phone call. if apple was smart they would just let every carrier have the iphone. then the carriers would all have to compete by actually being better. because honestly Sprint is the fastest with up to 10mbps, verizon is the best covered, at&t hs the iphone, and t-mobile is cheapest. thats it and if anyone actually researched anything about at&t they would know that they nearly bankrupted themselves in order to be the first ones with a full 3g network because if apple had gone with sprint then they would have had to file for chapter 11. ps iphone on verizon sadly isnt that likely anytime soon. they are already planning on putting it on the sprint 4g network next when the at&t exclusivity contract is over.

  • yay

I think bringing the iPhone to Verizon Wireless would be a great idea. Apple would make twice the amount of money, plus I realllly want an iPhone but I refuse to switch to att. PLEASE, APPLE SWITCH TO VERIZON WIRELESS!!!!! att sux

  • Keepin It Humble

I’ll say this…I work for ATT and although you may believe that my opininon is bias, it truly isnt. I have been with EACH and EVERY MAJOR Network. ATT, Sprint/NEXTEL, Verizon, and I’ll say this….All of them have their bugs. You cant tell me that you havent experienced issues with them all. Apple went with ATT for a reason. Yeah, there is a money issue associated with this as well, but believe it…ATT has one of the most robust networks in the industry. Apple knows that or they wouldnt have sync’d with ATT to roll out the IPHONE. Alot of research went into the carrier that Apple was going to align itself with as they didnt want this invention to fail. There are all kinds of SLA’s (Service Level Agreements) that are tied to this so trust me…ATT is on top of its game!!!! Apple knew if the network failed, then the IPhone would fail. Apple is no fool…they knew who was on top.

  • The Anti-Nerd

Wow, you really get that worked up over cell phone coverage huh? You’d think you were fighting for your heartland or some thing. You guys are nerds.

  • The Anti-Nerd

I agree. In the interest of keeping this discussion academic, I have to concede that At&t does have better coverage, but I’ve had lousy business experiences with them. I’ve had the same phone # with verizon for 12 years, and would prefer not to chage carries (especially because I have a grandfathered aircard with them that’s unlimited). I want an iPhone really badly, but refure to switch to At&t for it.

  • blah

what ever. AT&T has bad coverage in many areas. i have and iPhone 3Gs from AT&T and i baraly get service. All my friends have verizon and they have awesome service. But AT&T smartphone customers say that their coverage sucks. AT&T is under verizon and 2 other companies when it comes to smartphones. i believe verizon should get the new iphone

  • mike

I actually purchased an iphone off of the ATT website and realized that I put the wrong shipping address on the order. I immediately tried to call ATT to change the address and it took me 20min just to talk to someone live from ATT who was totally rude. Just this alone raised the flags for me to not want to deal with ATT customer service anymore so I canceled the order and will wait for the 4G to arrive with hopefully another carrier other than ATT!… and I thought Sprint sucked!!!

  • hahah love at7a

umm you dip thats LAND LINE at&t is the best on this world AMERICAN TELEPHONE AND TELEGRAPH #1verizon is a baby compared to a&t they have no idea it would be a BAD idea for them to goto the CDMA network because there international would suck and just bad things would happen trust ME

  • Barry

Where in the world does ATT get better coverage than Verizon? Not Kentucky, ATT does not have hardly any 3G coverage here, dropped calls all the time, and bad service, and the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Verizin has 3G everywhere around here, rarely drops calls, and the customer service always acts like they really want to help, but get this, you really don’t need them because everything is always right! I love Verizon and hate ATT.

  • Tmo-customer

I’ve been with Tmobile 4 about 4 years and really all they hAve is the most reliable network FOR THE PRICE and I have a unlocked iPhone and Tmobile service compared to verizon is hands down shitt and honestly if I could spare the extra few bucks I would switch in a matter of seconds if they had the iPhone but AT&T is just garbage they have the same coverage just about as Tmobile 4 as much as verizon!! And verizon is the best and facts are behind it so why fight over the truth people!

  • Mike

I agree, verizon is horrible. I too payed a hefty ETF just to get rid of them and their stupid policies they change every 6 months (always to the worse). I also hated how they always took decent phones and crippled them with their horrible custom software.

  • keith

At&t cant even produce 3g let alone 4g. if my iphone worked like it should it would be worth the money but it kinda works like the new 4g that embarrased steve jobs.
