Xbox 360 and it’s hardware limits

By: Alan Ng | April 23, 2009 | 12 Comments

With a lot of speculation going around about the possibility of an Xbox 720 console and who will be helping with it, one question has arisen: Have we come to the time when the Xbox 360 has reached it’s hardware limits? One source seems to think so.

Over at the ‘Badass’ Gamer Blog, there is an article addressing this very question. According to them, they believe the Xbox 360 console has reached it’s peak in terms of hardware capabilities and is just making ‘excuses’ when the comments ‘there is still more it can do’ are heard.

With the likes of Final Fantasy XIII on the way to the 360, it’s by no means a ‘finished article’ just yet. We are unsure yet if the next installment of Halo will continue on the 360 or make it’s way over to the new hardware.

The article continues on, explaining that after Gears 1 and 2, Microsoft have nothing else to show and that the Playstation 3 is the ‘console of the future’.

We’d like you to take a look at their article and make up your own judgement. Do you think the Xbox 360 has reached it’s peak?

    I agree that the 360 is nearing its potential but that’s to be expected. As for the PS3 being the “console of the future”, I find that very hard to believe. As a PS3 owner I get very tired of the “programmers haven’t learned how to unlock its true power” comments – how much longer do we have to wait? Personally I think the PS3 will never meet the potential or hype that Sony has set for it. Its also in danger of looking under powered when M$ release a new console and $ony can’t afford to do so because the PS3 hasn’t completed its projected life cycle.

    Has Xbox 360 reached its limit, not really. Multiplatform games are held down to cope with PS3′s weak GPU(1/4th the fillrate of Xbox 360′s GPu). Like PS3, only Xbox 360 exclusive titles like Lost Planet 2 and Alan Wake show off what Xbox 360 is truly capable of. Based on the look of those titles, we can still expect great things from Xbox 360, as long as developers finally give up on PS3 and commit themselves to Xbox 360.

  • Dan

    why would developers give up the PS3. It has sold 21+ million and is selling just under the 360 w-o-w.

    I woul d definitely agree. I havent played by xbox since the peak of the system with gears 2.

    YES 360 IS DONE, ITS MAXED OUT I HAVE DEVELOPERS IN MY FAMILY FOR LUCAS ARTS THAT MAKE GAMES FOR PS3 AND 360, HE TOLD ME IF I BUY A GAME , BUY IF FOR THE PS3, ITS MUCH BETTER IN EVERYWAY, THEY ARE USING ABOUT 35-38 PERCENT OF PS3 CAPABILITIES, AND FOR 360, ALL IT CAN DO, AND THATS NOT ENOUGH, WE HAD TO GET VERY CREATIVE, TO MAKE THE GAME AS GOOD AS WE CAN TO COMPARE TO PS3. 360 IS DONE MICROSOFT KNOWS IT THAT IS WHY THEY ARE MAKING A NEW SYSTEM TO LAUNCH IN 2012, ITS PS3 TIME, FROM NOW ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    @Deadmeat
    The fill rate is 1/2 that of the xbox 360 not a 1/4

    @lou
    I think you might actually be mentally retarded. Never go full ‘tard man.

    @Everyone
    This article is daft to begin with. Any games developer would want to use the hardware to it’s full capabilities. Even if the PS3 had all of this magical extra capability that you believe it has, if it aint getting used then that is a bad thing. I think a lot of people, especially the younger and less wise, get caught up in Sony’s marketing propaganda.
    Buy the system that has the best games – end of story. If you want to argue over dick size, get informed and base your conclusion on fact.

    @Lou
    I don’t speak Engrish.

  • lou

    oh sorry, let me write it in spanish for you. you should have no problems

  • pimpzee

    i wouldent say the problem is mainly that hardware of the xbox 360. because the ps3 is better in terms of gaming hardware, but it is not better by FAR. you could argue that xbox uses only simple 9G dvd discs but its not an issue if a game like gears of war can fit on it and still provide quality.

    the main problem that i see in the 360 is that, there are not many great titles for it in the future (2010+. if you look a tthe ps3 there are so many exclusives coming for it in future. im not saying this is the end of the line with xbox. but microsoft need to start innovating some new games. and a better variety not just shooters.

    atm microsoft are concentrating too highly on hardware entertainment, and they won’t be able to beat sony with that. the best they can do is to just keep going with games games and more games.

    I am getting so sick of the garbage…I own all 3 next gen systems and am so sick of the hype…first, why would a developer only be using 38 percent of a ps3 capabilities, when still most games hit a frame rate issue? Like some of the comments mentioned earlier, buy games you like, don’t buy for the game system’s camp. I originally loved my PS1, but got so nauseated with sony’s PS2 hype in 2001 that I didn’t purchase a unit until 2 years ago. Xbox 1 was over double the power of a PS2, Sony stated that it’s about the games and not the graphics, and outsold the Xbox by a large margin…even with lower quality in graphics.
    About hardware limits…do you remember how great God of War 2 looks on the PS2 compared to original PS2 launch titles? Developers and game engines get more efficient and better tweaked all the time…there’s way more headroom for both systems…the only limitation I think is RAM, but they seem to be finding sneaky ways around that as well.
    Enjoy your games in 2010…there’s many to come!!!
