Sun-Oracle News: IBM could of made a mistake
By: Peter Chubb | April 23, 2009 | 2 CommentsThe tech industry is still in shock following the news of Oracle’s (NASDAQ:ORCL) proposed $7.4bn acquisition of Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ:JAVA), which would lead to the company being called Sun-Oracle. This looks to be a huge mistake by IBM (NYSE:IBM), as they had their chance to acquire Sun Microsystems, but the bid fell through.
If the deal goes through, then this will help to strengthen Oracle’s hand in the software market, this also gives the company control over Java programming language and the Unix-based Solaris operating system.
Two weeks ago, IBM would have been able to dominate almost two-thirds of the Unix market, it is strange how things turn out, as IBM is lucky if they dominate a third of it. Phil Dawson, research VP at Gartner has been talking to ZD Net, and feels that IBM has missed the boat. Dawson believes that Solaris is a real threat here for IBM.
