I have become addicted to the Apple app downloads counter, and it is slowly getting closer to the magic 1 billion app downloads. That number should be achieved on the afternoon of 23 April, Thursday UK time, and the lucky one-billionth app download customer will have a surprise waiting.
Apple will give away a load of Mac products as well as a $10,000 (£6,700) iTunes gift card. After I finished staring at the counter, it was at 992,817,223 Apple have not said when they 1 billion app downloads to be reached, but research company mobileSQUARED has calculated when they think the counter will roll over.
Crave at Cnet reports that mobileSQUARED has said that it took six months to reach 500 million app downloads, that was achieved on January 19 2009. The other 500 million has taken just 94 days to reach, so you can see that the App Store is becoming even more popular.
This does make you wonder how other app stores will ever compete; we wish Google Market Place and BlackBerry App World all the luck.
