PS3 Potential: What could COD 7 achieve at full Potential?

PS3 Potential: What could COD 7 achieve at full Potential?

By: Alan Ng | April 21, 2009 | 12 Comments

Following on from the recent comments an undisclosed games developer made about the Playstation 3 not being able to reach it’s ‘Full potential’, we ask the question: Will it ever reach it’s full potential? Would games down the line such as COD7 be able to manage this?

The article in question here has sparked a lot of debate about the true power of the Playstation 3. We know games like Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2 and the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII have done a good job in trying to harness the true potential of the system, but no developers of those games have gone on record to actually say that they have used 100% power of the PS3.

Its fair enough to understand that it takes time to get to know what your working with as the Playstation 3 is still a fairly new console to some developers, but when are we actually going to have a game where it pushes the Playstation 3 to the max?

If you look at potential sequels the Playstation 3 has at it’s disposal, surely we are going to see a title where the full power is utilized. Call of Duty 7, Killzone 3, MGS5, Uncharted 3 are just some of the titles we’re throwing out which developers should really try and push the boundaries out.

Don’t forget we recently informed you of a story in which FFXIII producer Yoshinori Kitase said that they have used ‘nearly 100%’ of the full usage of the PS3 for their game, so it’s obvious that given the right time to develop a game properly as Square-Enix usually do, the results are there for everyone to see.

First of all, do you agree with the developers comments about the PS3′s power in the link we gave you above? We would like you to share your thoughts on the ‘PS3 capabilities’ debate. Drop us a comment below.

Who knows? Did the makers of God of War II think they’d maxed the potential of the Playstation 2 when they released God of War? … they probably thought they were close to it, and yet they still managed to draw a little more out of PS2.

I think gaming wise, perhaps FFXIII might be pushing close to Playstation 3 capacity? … I hope not – (and from what I’ve seen of Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2 and even Killzone 2, I don’t think they have).

But what has captured my interest, all the way at the bottom of the world here in New Zealand, is PlayTV! … I saw some video footage on it on Gametrailers.com and you start to realise just how much more the Playstation 3 will be able to do!

I know, I know. The argument I’ll get with that comment is, but it’s a games system?! … true, but why do people knock Sony for trying to add something a little more to their games console, and yet the Nintendo Wii is being hailed for Wii Fit … surely that is not a “typical” game … as such?!

The ability though to use a “games console”, and add to it features you would never have dreamed I think has to be a good thing. Especially for those of us who used to play Donkey Kong and the like, and think, “it just can’t get any better than this can it?!”

I think there is a lot more to the Playstation 3. Whether we’ll ever get to a stage where graphically we’ll be playing photorealistic games with environments that live and breathe in this generation? … I don’t know, probably not? But, the potential to offer a gamer far more depth and longevity to their gaming experience, well, I think we’ve probably only scratched the surface?

The PS3 is such a great machine. You really dont get a good understanding for what they are aiming for until you spend some time using the applications it has.

360 is a great console but i havent played it since gears 2 – but the ps3 is epic. never been interested in the wii [i have completed resi 4 on the wii and that was amazing tho]

i think sony have a great year ahead of them – for me they have the better exclusives under their belt – not to mention Street Fighter 4 playing like a dream with a dualshock sixaxis.

    go go sony

i personally think we are no were near the potentual of the ps3, as time goes on developers will find newer and better ways to handle things on the consoles, i think the ps2 was really gd and it still is…. there are tones of gd games to get for it and they are still releasing more games that look aot better than the older ones.

if the ps2 is anything to go by then i think there is still more room for improvment being that the ps3 has only been out for 3 years. if a company like square enix says that they have got nearly 100% of its power of the ps3 i belive they may be telling the truth but have they got their game engine set up to use the cell processer in the correct way, they most probly have being i have no experiance programming a game.

but as for games made by 3rd party developers they will not know the system as well as sony’s developers do and i belive that alot of 3rd party games will not hit the ps3s potentual. as for games like COD dont think it is likey to hit the ps3s power. and i dont think that COD looks great on ps3 or 360 atm….. but thats what i think anyway every one has their own opinion and this is mine.

the ps3 is so powerful, 8×3.2 just on processor, video processor and ram are impressive, the 360 only has 3×3.2, and far less on all other tech specs, i have a developer in the family that works for lucas arts, he oversaw the force unleashed prodjest, he said, ps3 is new they are still learning how to program for it but the raw power is unreal compared to the 360, you can do 100 times as much cool stuff on ps3 and were still learning meanwhile the 360 is already maxed out , they may learn a few new tricks but its maxed

Call of duty 7 or 8 will never come close to taking the PS3 to its max becuase it still a muiltiplatform game. Xbox cant be as powerfull as the PS3 Unless it is A PS3 exclusive or they start of with the PS3 version and make it the best a downgrade it for xbox, it wont ever take PS3 to the max as long as it has to share the same game with xbox.

if they used 100% of ps3 cpu (all 8 cores) and 100% of its GPU, i dont think there would be any room to improve on graphics that good. That wont ever happen tho. I dont even think sony knows how to exploit the true power of the PS3….

  • lou

they may be using most of what they know how to do now, the ps3 has 8x 3.2 processors, that is alot of power, a better faster nvidea graphics card and blueray disk which they can use 3-4 more times of uncompressed space on disk, they wont truly max out ps3 for many years, look at xbox 3×3.2 cpu, it is close to being maxed out, i get the inside scoop, i have family that are game developers for lucas arts, incharge of ps3 360, psp ds, dsi, wii format , ps3 is the future, mark my words, thats why microsoft is working on another system to release in 2012, to compete,, 360 will be done, there in there decline now, they have peaked, and there done

  • lou

the ps3 is no where near maxed out, i have game developers in the family, they say they are using on an average of 35 percent on ps3, and thats what they know, they still have a lot to learn about the system, 360 there using 90 percent plus on , its pritty much maxed outm they may learn a few new tricks but nothing crazy, 2009 and on you will see ps3 pulling away from 360 very fast when it comes to graphics , speed of game, all around power, 360 has peakes and is on its decline, ps3 is just starting mark my words, amazing things ahead with ps3, i OWN both ps3 and 360, the 360 is a good console, but 2009 and on its all about ps3, WATCH!!!!!!!

So many PS3 fanboys bigging up a machine that hasnt hardly improved since its day of launch and probably wont improve much in the future.
