Can Palm Pre and new Apple iPhone save falling handset market

Nokia’s CFO Rick Simonson has been talking to Finnish daily Helsingin Sanomat, and has said that the struggling handset market has not yet hit rock bottom. We have to wonder if the much-anticipated Palm Pre and the new Apple iPhone will be able to help with these struggling sales.

Reuters reports that Nokia’s chief financial officer was quoted as saying, “We don’t believe that the mobile phone markets have touched the bottom of this recession yet.” Nokia, the biggest cell phone maker has been hit hard by the recession, with a 27 percent fall in January-March sales, their biggest drop ever.

Palm has also seen its sales drop at an alarming rate, but most of that is self-inflicted as they now have an aging line-up. The launch of the Pre will do a lot to alleviate that, as it is the much talked about phone, well that and the rumored new Apple iPhone.

Do you think that the launch of a the Palm Pre and a new Apple iPhone will be enough to help dwindling sales of handsets, or is it something that will take much longer to resolve?
