PS3 overtakes Wii to become ‘top selling home console’ in Japan

Latest figures from MediaCreate have shown the Playstation 3 overtake the Nintendo Wii to become the best selling home console over in Japan. The Nintendo DS/i remains on top of the overall charts, but the PS3’s dominance as the best home console will be a worry for Nintendo as they try to get out of their ’slump’.

As reported by GI.Biz, The DS stands way clear at the top of the charts, with 62,409 units sold. It’s closest competitor is the PSP with 48,118 units sold which just goes to show that the handheld consoles are still as popular as ever over in Japan.

The PS3 is in third position with 20,362 sales with the Nintendo Wii behind it on 15,525 units sold. Microsoft still have a lot of work to do if they are going to crack the Japanese market, as their Xbox 360 console only managed to sell 7812 units.

This more than compensates for the Xbox US sales advantage. With PS3 also outselling the 360 in Europe, the 360/PS3 gap is narrowing, and with the much better PS3 exclusives lineup in 2009, expect it to accelerate..
