Gears of War as an Xbox 360 exclusive has helped us - Rod Fergusson

Gears of War 2 producer Rod Fergusson has stated that keeping the series exclusive to the Xbox 360 has benefited the franchise as a whole. He made these latest comments at the recent GDC event.

In an interview with VG247, he believed that keeping Gears of War exclusive with Microsoft has allowed the team to focus solely on one platform and focus their efforts together in terms of development.

He stated: “Microsoft is just an awesome publisher. They’re a great partner for us. They help us in so many ways, both in terms of the obvious with marketing support, and also in terms of usability, tested, play-testing, design reviews, support on the art side and a whole bunch of different things.”

He also mentioned Unreal Tournament 3 and how it’s equally as good on PS3 and PC as well as 360, but again stated that focusing their efforts on one platform is clearly an ideal option for Epic.

Most publishers would agree that given the architecture differences this generation, committing solely to one platform, increases their ability to put out a solid AAA title. And I think all gamers would agree to that as well. People may ‘think’ the days of exclusivity are over, but I think MS, Nintendo and Sony inadvertantly forced it to stay alive, when they came up with the respective architectures for their machines. But, the facts are, you don’t see anything better than Sony’s first party studios on the PS3. You don’t see anything better than Gears/Halo on the 360, and you don’t see anything but the franchise masterpieces (Mario, Metroid etc..) on Nintendo.

I don’t know aye? I have a PS3 and 360, and agree that exclusives are great in relation to final product. But I guess if I were to put myself on the other side of the coin, and was even remotely smart enough to come up with a game idea, let alone build it, would I be doing myself an injustice to NOT try and gain profits from both next generation consoles (sorry, I still struggle to agree that Wii is truly “Next Gen”). I mean, Gears of War I & II are mint. Killzone II for me is king. Add into the exclusives mix Metal Gear IV, Halo III and there is a huge argument for owning either console. Great games, killer graphics! BUT! … what about Grand Theft Auto IV?! You can’t tell me that despite architectural differences, Take Two Interactive didn’t think it was worth it? According to their own sources, Grand Theft Auto IV reached sales of $500 million dollars - the game itself, across two platforms (not inculding the PC version), cost $100 million? Worth the time, effort and money I say!
