PS3 Disc Glitches and Errors: Problems seem to be rising

PS3 Disc Glitches and Errors: Problems seem to be rising

By: Daniel Chubb | April 11, 2009 | 40 Comments

While we love our PS3 system for testing and reviewing games (One of the first released and still working fine), we have also heard an increasing number of Playstation 3 owners complaining about Disc read issues.

This seems to be on multiple sites across the web, in our own Problems section we have had a few reports on different disc problems as well.

Back in February of this year we had a user post information here about their 40GB PS3 having disc read issues. They said that their “PS3 stopped reading any disc, CD, DVD, Games and Bluray”. This was followed by other users reporting similar problems.

More recently, we heard reports of users having their Disc icon not appear on the xmb of the ps3 from a few users. They said that the PS3 game discs did not show, but Blu-ray movies worked fine.

One user even formatted their PS3 hard drive and found after doing so that the game discs started to show again. This showed that it was a software issue and not hardware.

Have you had any PS3 disc read issues, and more specifically the game discs not showing?

  • Um….right.

You have ZERO basis to imply that the RATE of errors is increasing. More reports is a result of more owners.

    Hit trolling much?

  • Tony

Fair comment, more reports would happen thanks to more PS3 owners. But this does not help the fact that more and more users are reporting the same PS3 issue. Disc problems.

Google it and you will see.

I got my PS3 2 or 3 days after release so I have the 60 GB, I have never had any problems with it except i got a yellow light once cause a little person was messing around with the on/off switch apart from that it has worked perfectly well and all of my friends with PS3′s have not suffered any problems with their PS3′s

Two of my friends have a PS3 and Xbox and for some reason have the same games on both systems, they both said to me a few weeks ago that the disks on their XBOX’s had stopped working whilst the PS3 disk was working fine… (They have 40GB system)

My question is which system has more disk faults???

  • RSM

No but my friend has, then we found out the (idiot) was putting the disc in backwards lol.

So alround maybe its the newer models :( which is true sux for people trying to get into the PS3 which is a brill machine.

I bought my 60gb PS3 on the original launch date. I have had zero problems.

This article seems like it was written by a 360 fan boy.

I wouldn’t put too much stock into it or it’s author.

    Adam Sessler maybe???

    LOL

Launch ps3 with 320 gig hard drive no problems that was the 20gig. I also have a 80 gig model now 320 gigs as well no problems. My launch unit I use 8 hours a day.

It’s happened to me. I got my PS3 (brand new 80 gig model) on Killzone 2 release day and played it a lot in the past month. Yesterday while I was playing Killzone 2 the game suddenly froze and the system wasn’t responding. I switched off the system and restarted. Then when I tried to run the game again and it failed to start. So I tried my other games and none of them ran. Some went to the PlayStation logo screen and then back to the XMB and gave me the error ’80010514′. After much Googling, I reset my PS3 to restore the file system. And it still didn’t work. So I thought my Blu-ray drive has probably died. I was however still able to run normal DVDs. So I called up Sony, the guy said they will send a replacement unit on Wednesday.

I don’t know whether this is a widespread problem or not. I’m not gonna make a judgement yet because I may just be one of a rare few unfortunate souls. As long as it doesn’t happen again, I’ll be happy. Sony does have a history with disc read errors, it happened with both PS1 and PS2. But they still make very cutting-edge and reliable consoles, considering how sophisticated the PS3 is. Hopefully they won’t ignore this issue though and try to fix whatever is causing it.

I have a launch 60G that I got in 01/07, and it’s currently being repaired by Sony. It stopped Reading Blu Ray discs (PS3 game discs as well as movies), though it still read DVDs (PS2 games included).

  • ken

Try an ordinary lens cleaner first. First issue ps3 (with emotion chip) blown drive (350gig) had one read error with the discs, lens cleaner fixed it immediately.

I have a 40gb ps3 and I have absolutely no problems. I am a trucker and this thing rides with me and has bounced down the road for over 100k miles and it still works fine. It even had my 2 year old jam a bunch of nickels in the disk drive and then press the buttons up front a bunch of times. I just cracked it open took the nickels out and the thing still works great.

  • Emilio

Lol this is actually quite funny,

I have a launch 60GB model and i have had ZERO problems with it…

What is possibly going on with all these new found PS3 problems? lol

    Go Sony :) x

Hi chaps, if you have FW 2.50 or later, when the console is in standby hold down the power button, the console will beep once and then turn off after 10 seconds, when its back in standby do the same again but this time after the first beep it will beep times and a restore menu will come up, select restore file system and all will be ok, it will say that the HDD will be formatted but it will keep all your data, hope this helps.

  • scott

sorry, should add that it fixes the blue ray game logo not showing on the XMB, and any currupt data on the HDD.

  • John

I bought a 60GB PS3 when they first came out and I am starting to have this disc read problem now. I put the disc in and nothing!!! it’s as if there is no disc in at all, but when I turn off the PS3 and turn it back on it reads the disc fine. All other DVD’s, Blu-Rays and CD’s are working fine though.

  • serfo

I just had this problem last night. I have a 60gb and take extremely good care of it. If you google the 800 errors you will see it is a widespread problem. I honestly hope soe gest sued. Ive had my ps3 since 4/07 so it is way out of warranty. I will be paying $150 dollars for it to be sent off. I am getting ripped off. Hopefully, it never happens to you but if it does, be prepared to be disappointed and open up your wallet if you don’t have a receipt or have had it longer than a year.

  • RSM

I have a 40g PS3 and it recently fell victim to the quite common disc read issue. Rang Sony who were aware of the issue and even though my PS3 was out of warranty they collected it and repaired it free of charge in 1 week. Good show.

  • VinTheDean

Remember that the squeaky wheel gets all of the attention. Just because more people are reporting it, does not really mean that there is an increase. Perhaps is the same number is just that more people are complaining about it “online”.

Some people just call Sony directly and others go to forums. I had the issue too but I was able to work around it. Until I read some fixes online. I had the issue but not really reported it.

  • antony

i’ve had ps3 since launch [stayed of skwl] and the only errors i’ve had is occasionally the hdd needs to be rebuilt. and a few times its reformatted without my permission, good harware, poor software.

  • keaney

I had this disc read error just after christmas. When I rang up about it to get it fixed I did get the impression that it was a wide spread fault.

They took a few details and quickly realised my PS3 was out of warranty, and instructed me that I would have to pay for any fault with the unit, however as soon as I told them that it would not read any discs they immediately changed their tune and told me it would be repaired for free.

This would lead me to beleive that the problem is more well known to sony than they are letting on, the guy I spoke to on the help desk was adament that he had not heard of any similar problems but there seem to be plenty of cases on various internet sites.

They did however fix it and send it back to me within 2 weeks, so not too bad, but does leave me a bit worried that it might crop up again.

I had the PS3 disc no read problem a week ago too, I got the 40Gb PS3 in December 07. Fair enough it is 3 months out of its warranty but when I called sony, initally the call centre guy said I would have to pay £99 GBP for a refurb. I argued it after seeing others had received a replacement free of charge from Sony after theirs were out of Warranty, the inital person I spoke to at Sony careline said that it was my only option and I should take it. I was a little but annoyed by that (it seems they are following a script!!) so I asked for a manager. No manager available but they would call me back next day, manager calls me back and said that on this occassion (thanks soo v much sony!) they would replace the PS3 with a refurb. I have a feeling that this is a problem that is going to get a whole lot worse over the coming months for Sony. It seems the blu-ray drive in the PS3 is a major weak point from what I can tell so far from my research into this. I may have to get the sony care warranty now (even though it is expensive long term!)

here is a description of my problem:

okay earlier today i was playing COD4 with no problems. system shut down without issue (this is probably 4 hours ago). i just tried to boot it up by clicking on the disc icon and it didn’t get to the “playstation 3 logo”, it gave me an error and said there was a problem with the start up process. okay, wtf. i exit out and there’s no disc displayed in the games menu. odd.
reboot the system (when it rebooted it made the little beep, beep, beep noise it makes when it doesnt shut down normally) and it comes back up…log into PSN fine, can browse internet, can browse my files…no disc listed in the games section. put in a dvd…wait for it…no disc loads in the video section. i notice that the little circle in the top right hand corner is active, so i wait for it and eventually my system locks up. reboot again and this time try a regular CD. same thing. i have not tried blu ray discs though as i do not own any

what a nub, did you not even think to back them up to a usb stick first?

  • http://www.threespeech.co.cc mobiletone

launch day PS3 (first in queue too) 60Gb boosted to 250GB, had problems early on in it’s life but since i swopped the drive i’ve had no issues at all. for the record the original drive is now in an external caddy and it still plays up every now and again so the issue for me at least seemed to be related to the harddrive.

Bought a 80gig and in a little over a year have sent it back to Sony three times for the same reason, disc read errors. Game freezes, and then bites the dust. Keep getting the same one back even though the rep tells me will be a diff one. Can’t get the reason from Sony as to what is causing it to screw up. Spend 500 bucks on something that you don’t have half the time sucks.

  • bestsportnascar

They will not replace mine and it is out of warranty by 14 days.

I think we should call them and each spend a total of 40 hours on the phone over time to waste $400 of their money.

  • MadAsHell

I’ve had similar problems with nearly all my consoles except xbox1 and Gamecube, in most cases i managed to fix them by adjusting the laser beam focus or lens position, this worked fine on 3 different dreamcasts (2 of mine and a friends), an xbox360 and 2 PS2s although they eventually developed other drive related problem and had to be replaced.

My PS3 has just started to develope some disc read errors but since it is still under guarantee and the Blu-ray drive is likely to be expensive, i’ll send this one back.

Should you have an out of guarantee model though, it might be worth checking out whether adjusting the laser beam focus or lens position is possible, i’ve not had the PS3 apart but in every other case it was a relatively easy adjustment of 2 very small scews.

I’ve got the disappearing game Disc on XMB problem. My PS3 is having issues now. Its a 60GB and I use playTV as my primary TV connection. My ps3 is on most of the day so this could be causing heat problems OR the hdd could be struggling now that it’s knocking on a bit. I’m going to try a backup and restore soon but it’s such a chore! HDD replacement soon I think!

Have PS3 I purchased from BB. After 15 months, I get audio but no visuals. Sony wants $149 to repair. UGH! I only use it to watch DVDs. I had heard there are other problems with overheating, so I kept it off when not in use. It’s not the Sony quality that I’m familiar with. I’ll toss it out before investing another $149 in a $300 product after such a short life span.

I’ve had a PS3 for just over a year and yesterday it stopped recognizing any disk/game.

It is really frustrating and now the machine is essentially worthless.

This seems to be a big problem that is fairly common and should be getting much much more info.

I sure wouldn’t buy another PS3 since they are so prone to failure.

  • Ranger

I’ve owned my PS3 40gig 22 months and it wont read my games. I did a Restore Defaults, Hard drive Format, and a total System Restore which takes 2.5 hours. Then and only then does it work. However when I turn it off, it stops working again when I try to play. I need to do another System restore which of coarse takes another 2.5 hours. Sony said to send it in for $149 and they’ll send me a refurb with a 90 warranty. This is obviously a bad option wen a new one is only $50 more. Is anyone else having this issue, and or do you know how I should go about fixing it?

I’m very disipointed in the PS3 line and how Sony is dealing with so many people having the same exact issues. Especialy how they’re charging so much to fix it. Now they are more reliable than the XBOX, its way to expensive to be so flakey of a product. My first gen NINTENDO still works as long as I blow in it!!

  • Dennis

Don’t buy a PS3. I had my PS3 for 1 year and nine months and it doesn’t read disc or games anymore. I have to send it in for repair which cost $150. My atari still works and I got that back in 1985. I see thousands of PS3 users are having the same problem. Customer support would not waive the fee to repair a broken product.

    SONY SCAM.

  • AceofSpades

My PS3 is 1st gen (60 gig). Its been working like a charm until about 2 1/2 months ago. It reads games and then they freeze after about 10-12 minutes of the disc being played. (only games, everything else works fine) Warranty is up and that was the back up plan, please help. Ace~of~Spade

  • CAM

I agree with this article. I have bought 4 ps3s 2x60g, 2x40g, and one slim. My 2 40g went out in about a year, my refurb 60gb went out after 4 months and within a week of the 60g my original launch 60g is just starting to do DRE now. This is making me wonder if somehow a bug or virus has been planted to make them go bad, what a money maker for those of us out of warranties, 175 or 120 and trade for a slim, I have always been a sony fan, but I smell something fishy.

  • michal
