PS3 Disc Glitches and Errors: Problems seem to be rising

While we love our PS3 system for testing and reviewing games (One of the first released and still working fine), we have also heard an increasing number of Playstation 3 owners complaining about Disc read issues.

This seems to be on multiple sites across the web, in our own Problems section we have had a few reports on different disc problems as well.

Back in February of this year we had a user post information here about their 40GB PS3 having disc read issues. They said that their “PS3 stopped reading any disc, CD, DVD, Games and Bluray”. This was followed by other users reporting similar problems.

More recently, we heard reports of users having their Disc icon not appear on the xmb of the ps3 from a few users. They said that the PS3 game discs did not show, but Blu-ray movies worked fine.

One user even formatted their PS3 hard drive and found after doing so that the game discs started to show again. This showed that it was a software issue and not hardware.

Have you had any PS3 disc read issues, and more specifically the game discs not showing?

  1. Um....right. says:

You have ZERO basis to imply that the RATE of errors is increasing. More reports is a result of more owners.

    Hit trolling much?

Fair comment, more reports would happen thanks to more PS3 owners. But this does not help the fact that more and more users are reporting the same PS3 issue. Disc problems.

Google it and you will see.

Remember that the squeaky wheel gets all of the attention. Just because more people are reporting it, does not really mean that there is an increase. Perhaps is the same number is just that more people are complaining about it “online”.

Some people just call Sony directly and others go to forums. I had the issue too but I was able to work around it. Until I read some fixes online. I had the issue but not really reported it.

I got my PS3 2 or 3 days after release so I have the 60 GB, I have never had any problems with it except i got a yellow light once cause a little person was messing around with the on/off switch apart from that it has worked perfectly well and all of my friends with PS3’s have not suffered any problems with their PS3’s

Two of my friends have a PS3 and Xbox and for some reason have the same games on both systems, they both said to me a few weeks ago that the disks on their XBOX’s had stopped working whilst the PS3 disk was working fine… (They have 40GB system)

My question is which system has more disk faults???

  3. RSM says:

No but my friend has, then we found out the (idiot) was putting the disc in backwards lol.

So alround maybe its the newer models :( which is true sux for people trying to get into the PS3 which is a brill machine.

i had a problem and i formated my drive all my game saves were deleated and i had to play all those games again i even had to install the game data again

  6. I bought my 60gb PS3 on the original launch date. I have had zero problems.

This article seems like it was written by a 360 fan boy.

I wouldn’t put too much stock into it or it’s author.

  7. spencer says:

Launch ps3 with 320 gig hard drive no problems that was the 20gig. I also have a 80 gig model now 320 gigs as well no problems. My launch unit I use 8 hours a day.

  8. Dew says:

It’s happened to me. I got my PS3 (brand new 80 gig model) on Killzone 2 release day and played it a lot in the past month. Yesterday while I was playing Killzone 2 the game suddenly froze and the system wasn’t responding. I switched off the system and restarted. Then when I tried to run the game again and it failed to start. So I tried my other games and none of them ran. Some went to the PlayStation logo screen and then back to the XMB and gave me the error ‘80010514′. After much Googling, I reset my PS3 to restore the file system. And it still didn’t work. So I thought my Blu-ray drive has probably died. I was however still able to run normal DVDs. So I called up Sony, the guy said they will send a replacement unit on Wednesday.

I don’t know whether this is a widespread problem or not. I’m not gonna make a judgement yet because I may just be one of a rare few unfortunate souls. As long as it doesn’t happen again, I’ll be happy. Sony does have a history with disc read errors, it happened with both PS1 and PS2. But they still make very cutting-edge and reliable consoles, considering how sophisticated the PS3 is. Hopefully they won’t ignore this issue though and try to fix whatever is causing it.

  9. Mike says:

I have a launch 60G that I got in 01/07, and it’s currently being repaired by Sony. It stopped Reading Blu Ray discs (PS3 game discs as well as movies), though it still read DVDs (PS2 games included).

  10. ken says:

Try an ordinary lens cleaner first. First issue ps3 (with emotion chip) blown drive (350gig) had one read error with the discs, lens cleaner fixed it immediately.
