Intel has revealed yet more details on its Moorestown chip platform, which has an estimated launch date of 2010. The Moorestown device will be launched together with a newer version of Moblin, this is a Linux-based OS that Intel have created for small devices.
Moorestown is a set of chips that are more energy efficient than other chips, which is why Intel have designed them to work computers small enough to fit in your pocket. Intel calls these mobile Internet devices (MID). This new family of chips will be based on the Lincroft system-on-chip (SoC); this also includes the Atom, which we see in most netbooks.
PC World is reporting that while at the Intel Developer Forum in Beijing on Wednesday, Intel’s head of Ultra Mobility, Anand Chandrasekher showed the crowd a device with Moorestown. It showed that the device uses 10 times less power than a similar device running on an Atom chip.
Moorestown could launch in late 2009 or early 2010, once we know more we will update you.
