Skype iPod Touch Download: Is an iPhone really needed for calls?

Last week we heard that Skype had released an iPod Touch and iPhone download that allows users to use their service for making free calls and messages over Wi-Fi.
The free download can be accessed via Apple iTunes and could be seen as a replacement for the need of iPhone’s and cell phones. While we believe that we are not in this position yet, as more and more free WI-Fi services are released it could become possible in time.
Imagine long range free Wi-Fi covering the country or Wi-Fi given free via ISP’s using a sharing service. There are many projects underway and it is more a matter of time than “IF” until will get Wi-Fi almost everywhere.
When you’re in coffee shops and other free Wi-Fi areas, why use your phone when you can call for free with Skype and other voice-over-Internet services?
In theory this seems a great idea, but currently it’s not practical yet. Does VOIP on your phone interest you?
