GM and Segway: Two-wheeled, two-seat electric vehicle
By: Peter Chubb | April 7, 2009 | 1 CommentThere are two reasons why we need to reduce how much we rely on big vehicles to get around in, the first is how much money it costs us, and the second is what damage it does to our environment. Troubled automaker General Motors Corp. (GM) and Segway Inc. are now working together and they feel that two wheeled vehicles are the answer.
Los Angeles Times have reported that both companies have announced that they are to develop a two-wheeled, two-seat electric vehicle called the PUMA, short for Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility. This mode of transport although small will be very safe, and is an inexpensive and clean alternative to standard vehicles that we user every day.
GM and Segway have said that the PUMA will have a communications network, this allows for all of the vehicles to interact with one another. This system will help to regulate the flow of traffic; as a result will prevent crashes.
The PUMA prototype weighs 300 pounds and runs on lithium-ion battery and dual electric motors. The environmentally friendly vehicle will reach speeds of 35MPH and can travel 35 miles between charges.
