Sony PS2 will lure buyers to the PS3

After the recent announcement of the PS2 price cut, Sony has recently commented that the cut will eventually convince customers into buying a Playstation 3 console.

In an interview with ArsTechnica, Sony’s John Koller explained the importance of the PS2 price cut and how it will effect PS3 sales in the future.

He stated: “We’ve found that almost 80 percent of PlayStation 3 owners either currently own or have in the past owned a PlayStation 2, so that statistic on its own speaks volumes. One could argue that there’s no richer source of PS3 purchasers than the 50 million PlayStation 2 owner base, and we’re engaging those PlayStation 2 owners as they get ready to jump into next-gen with PS3. ”

He also pointed out that the only way the Playstation 2 would stop selling would be if Sony stopped supporting the console. Judging by the looks of things, that isn’t going to happen for quite some time yet.

Let us know what you think. Do you think the price cut of the PS2 will lure customers without a PS3 into buying?

Not today, not next year, but several years down the line absolutely.

Unlike Microsoft and it’s day-by-day strategy (or lack of one, when you look at the mess they made of the original Xbox and the 360), Sony have a 10yr plan, it’s not all about getting all your consumers to buy your product in the short term and compromise the long term (like Microsoft have done), it’s about getting year on year growth and continued sales.

I would bet the PS3 easilly shifts 200m consoles over it’s lifetime.

I like the way Sony look at the bigger picture.

In the End - Sony’s devotion to gamers and being real within the industry will see them prevail.

360 peaked with Gears 2 and the RROD still aint sorted whilst they have killed off the xbox 1 and they are looking at making the follow up to the 360?

what part of the paragraph about ms was there anything of real susbstance for gamers?

sony? pushing all their current consoles - all of them - isolating no gamer whether you like psp, ps2 ps3 - there is an integrity about them - MS just want to take over the world - only here they are failing!

    ha ha ha

sony all - ALL - the way!

How can a PS2 price-cut influence people to move to the PS3? I truly have no idea what Sony are on about sometimes. Keep in mind I’ve had a PS1, PS2 and now PS3, I’m happy being unbiased and objective.

Finally, just a mention. When the PS1 came out, I bought it. When the PS2 came out, I bought it. Both consoles being £300. However, when the PS3 launched, I waited for a price cut to get it close to £300 as Sony had priced me out of their console. This coming from with a fairly decent disposable income.

Sony - pay attention. Bring your console to a wider audience and get the price sorted out ASAP. Don’t shoot yourself in the foot but, for the love of God, do something about this price. It’s killing you!

    @bunimomike

What does it matter to you? You are are 1st tier PS3 adopter and already have one. The PS3 won’t be at the £100 pricepoint for many many years, the PS2 is at there now.

It’s not just about PS3, there are emerging markets where PS2 can sell very well there, and later on in the PS3’s life, they can adopt that then.

22m PS3 console sales in 2 years is very respectible, as Microsoft have done 28m Xbox sales in 3 years (god only knows how many of those are replacements).
