Sony: DSi vs. PSP and the kids factor

We wrote to you last week discussing the debate on how Sony would counter the release of the Nintendo DSi. Well it looks as if Sony have made the first move in the war of words as a Sony PR press release given to Engadget reveals some feisty comments.

As the press release from Engadget reads, Sony have labelled the DSi a kid’s toy, reaching out to a ‘kids’ market, which they have ‘always’ targeted. They say there is limited support for the DSi from external publishers, which will effect the DSi in the long run. They point out the growing number of publishers commited to the PSP at the moment, highlighting upcoming games such as Rock Band: Unplugged, Assassin’s Creed and Dissidia: Final Fantasy. They then big up the games coming directly from their own studios such as Little Big Planet and Motorstorm.

It will be interesting how Nintendo react to this statement from Sony. Who do you support at the moment? Let us know what you think of Sony’s comments.

i would definitely sign up with Sony..there games are way better i don’t want crappy little kid games who’s graphics make my eyes hurt from Nintendo…

    • the name is secret says:

well, the PSP is more of a multiedia gadget, unlike the DS games. i personally prefer the dsi with its wide range, but thats just me. dont agree with the hurting eyes bit though. my opinion again, maybe im just weird.

    • hi says:

pk first of all the psp cant use gmail and the damn disk spining is really annoying and those produo cards are not cheap and more no touchscreen no chat and no camera. sorry got on a rant but really.

    • Khephran says:

I own a nintendo DS Lite, i really like the nintendo games but every non-nintendo game has left me disappointed. i beat the game in a few hours and teh graphics suck. i like the mario and zelda type games though, and COD4 was ok. Based on what i’ve seen from the PSP teh games have good graphics and you can actually enjoy them if you aren’t 10.
the graphics from Nintendo suck super bad and i have no idea why everybody is getting so worked up over nintendo, the Wii is the same exact way.

  2. personson says:

well it’s nice competition that nintendo gives but I still think that the psp is a better spend.

  3. ZOOONY says:

The PSP has always been a powerhouse, producing better graphics than the ds. And he is right the ds is for little kids. I havent seen such b******* that adults play with nintendo handhelds. Same goes for the Wii. It makes shitty graphics but has sold the most because of all the kids that have their parents buy it.

    • cRapPsP says:

lol graphics is nothing without a good gameplay! psp games are boring once u have finished a game..there’s no even fun with every games! it’s just a piece of shit in terms of the gameplay nothing new applied! it’s just the same thing as before! while ds sells better because it has new features which are not being offered by other consoles! just look at the innovative gameplay and how it trashes out the tradition gameplay of the psp! only the graphix are great but to tell you frankly there’s nothing much about the game you’ll probably end up boring playing with tekken and nba!

      • kevin says:

dude that is so true i never even heard of any new features on the crappy psp go well dont know if it is crappy though
but your right sony made all these psp systems but nothing new [yet]
        i recommend dsi

  4. kush says:

i dont really care about how bad the graphics are on the dsi, because even though psp gots good games dsi got them old and new mario games and those are the best frein thing to play, every1 at myshool who gots a psp loves my dsi. and u cant beat them old mario classic games. oh and lol btw, i wrote this message with my dsi:p. oh freak my freakin hand frekin hurts dang it

  5. r4 games says:

To me PSP is lot better as it comes with more exciting features than DSi, its no that I am a fan of sony but I think PSP is a better console in terms of features and compatibility it provides.

  6. Gamer Anonymous says:

I pick DSi. Those that say the PSP is a multimedia device are right but, so is the DSi it can play music too. Though just get a Ipod if thats what you want to use it for. Yea a PSP can play movies but, you might as well by the DVD(or BLU RAY disc) because the UMD movies cost just as much as them (I.E. Hancock is $22 and You Don’t Mess with the Zohan is $14)A DSi has a wider variety of games. As for it being a kids toy how is Grand Theft Auto Chinatown, COD Modern Warfare and World at War, Mortal Kombat, and Tom Clancys EndWar a kids toy? A PSP is great if you want repetitous gameplay with little plot.

    • kevin says:

oh my gosh so true i have seen comments that say dsi is just a shitty kid thing
thank you for pointing them out
those game like grand theft auto chinatown wars are not kid games
sony will lose i think i love my dsi
      LONG LIVE NINTENDO!

    • lol! says:

by your logic, i’d have to carry around three things with me: a phone, an iPod, and a PSP. why do that when i can just carry around my PSP (and phone usually)? sure, it’s not as efficient as my mp3 player for music but it more than gets the job done. also, i should note that the DSi battery life has suffered greatly… it has been clocked to about 4-6 hrs now instead of the usual 9-12 that the DSlite had. the PSP has about 4-6hrs as well. so you really do get more bang for your buck for something that outperforms it’s rival with higher technical ability. if you nintentards think the music on there will be any better when it only supoprts .aac files (LOL!!!), then go ahead you blind fanboys! the beautiful 4.5 in screen helps with watching movies too, which by the way, i’m just going to download and convert then put them on my PSP via mediaGo. it’s a simple process and it works. can you watch video on your DSi? hm, no? didn’t think so. what about free roaming, action style hack ‘n’ slash like God of War? can you do that? hm, no either? wow, what the fuck can you do?

although i’m being sarcastic, the DS clearly doesn’t meet MY standards as a GAMER. it’s a great handheld with some really great games, but the majority of which that aren’t first party games (as usual) tend to suck… badly. the mario, zelda, metroid, etc are always great, but i’ve been playing those games since diaper days. the truth is, i and many others are just ready for something new. the PSP is refreshing to someone like me who primarily wanted to play action and sports games. let me tell you now… if you’ve played madden on the DS, then you know it’s a joke. the graphics are so ugly, the physics make no sense, the animations are choppy, and the gameplay is just watered down. on the PSP i notice no difference from it’s console counterpart except *slightly* worse graphics (they’re still incredible though).

      • theres a beter way says:

just get an iphone(if you prophere at&t)and get dsi or psp because the iphone is a ipod internet youtube ect. and it come with games to so its like you only need a phone to have funor get the iphone and dsi because you can mess wth pictures and you can draw when you talk to people and even if you do think its for kids thats what a ps2,xbox,orps3 is 4 its not like you need the same games for two difrent systems i mean really and plus you can mess wth the sound by making somthing else be the voice in the song

      • chisomagbo says:

The dsi is the best and you guys know it psp has fat graphics and everyone tells me they get tired of it

  7. Nintendo vs. Sony debater says:

to me lets break it down psp- can play movies, watch videos, play games, go online, and listen to music. good? no it breaks too easy my opinion would be the dsi. nintendo gets outmatched by sony so what do they do, invent a upgraded version that can compete with the psp good? yes for about the same price on the system but with lower prices on the games without it breaking easy, take my point of veiw for advice i’m an expert at this

  8. For me Nintendo DSi is the choice

  9. jimbo said says:

I choose DSi because Nintendo DSi’s games is fun, PSP is for adult and is no fun. i like Nintendo DSi 80% and PSP 20%. Nintendo DSi has two screen (which mean double screen) and has a lot of games, so for my choice to buy is Nintendo

  10. mrmattadrian says:

This is just my opinion but I think the dsi is better but i have to agree that the psp is the multimedia KING but the dsi has som pretty cool features i would prefer the dsi not saying the psp isn`t any good but give the dsi a try by the i am writing this from my dsi
