Palm Pre: Developers invited to create applications

Palm is now starting to prepare for the launch of its new handset, the Pre. The phone maker has now invited developers to create applications for its latest smartphone. Palm has a lot riding on the Pre, as it will have to take on the likes of the Apple iPhone 3G, as well as Research in Motion’s (RIM) BlackBerry smartphones.

Palm has already announced that the Palm App Catalog will launch when the Pre handset hits stores later in this quarter. These app stores are a trend that was first started by Apple with its App Store for the iPhone handset.

Mobiledia have informed us that Palm has asked programmers to submit Pre applications to the App Catalog once it opens.

Programmers will be able to submit Pre applications to the App Catalog after it opens. Developers will be able to apply online at http://developer.palm.com, where they will then be given a Mojo software developers kit (SDK). This kit will then allow developers to design an application for the Pre.

Palm needs the Pre to work, as the whole company is relying on the success of the new smartphone.
