April 1 was expected to be one of the worst days for computers running on Windows XP and Vista, as this was the day when the activation of the Conficker worm kicked in. However, the day passed without incident.
Computer World explains that on the build up to April 1, there had been panic that the Conficker worm would cause all kinds of issues for those running on XP and Vista, but a few days after things are now very calm and it looks as though the Internet has survived this latest attack.
A few days before April 1, IT managers were concerned about the Conficker worm, but they were very confident that their teams were able to deal with the attack. Most companies had patched the vulnerability long before the worm was switched on; this was done by using updated anti-malware and intrusion-detection software.
