Sony: 256 online-player MAG is ”Only Possible on PS3”

Buzz This

Sony’s John Koller has revealed that upcoming MMO shooter MAG: Massive Action Game is ‘only possible on the PS3′. He made his ‘latest’ comments while speaking at the latest GDC event.

When speaking to VG247, Koller explained: “MAG is a 256 online-player game which is spectacular. If you look at that competitively, it’s something that’s only possible on PS3. The processor speed, the ability of PS3 to showcase 256 players at any given time, and their actions. ”

The game was originally showcased at E3 2008 and is due to be released sometime this year. Koller informed us that the game is said to be an ‘iteration of Socom’, one of their other successful shooter franchises.

Some interesting comments there then guys, what do you make of them?

ur be lucky if u can find 30 people to play with on the playstation network.

swearing creates a linguistic hindrance and makes everything you say a fail.

As an owner of all 3 current gen systems, I must say that the PS3 is really beginning to stretch it’s legs. I thought the chaos of Killzones 32 or R2’s 60 were awesome, but this is gonna take the cake. I can’t wait to see how they’re gonna pull this off. The line up of seemingly must have exclusives this year has been great.

I like Killzone 2’s 32 player matches, but the maps in Resistance 2 make some of their 32 player matches just a big ball of confusion.

Not that there’s no confusion in KZ2, but I think KZ2’s environments support 32 player matches better than R2’s does. Just my $0.02.

I’m hoping MAG is better than SOCOM: Confrontation. Not that SOCOM: C is bad…it’s just not great. Slant 6 really could’ve tried to tap into Zipper more to make SOCOM: C.

I’m really pumped for MAG though.

And why is it that you can’t even post an article about a PS3 exclusive game without having some Xbot come in and troll?

Oh yeah…his 360 is probably getting it’s RROD problem “fixed” for the 50th time…leaving him with time to troll the internet for PS3 articles to squat on.

    Nice life.

I have been playing for the past week and it KICKS A$$! the snipers are deadly, the self revive if far better than the auto heal of COD, the players are split into squads that have open mics, you can apply for squad leader (lvl 14+) and set targets for your squad. I’m only playing the beta and it feels great. a few bugs here and there but nothing that distracts from the awesomeness of the game, except for one. you choose your team (RAVENpwn) and then you are always set to defending or atacking on each map.

I live in the UK but made a fictional US account to be able to download it from US PSN. long initial download too but you can understand why, it’s so huge! the maps are easily 3times larger than CODmw2 and thats just the 64player sabotage mode. the domination mode with 256 players is easily 10-15 times larger, you really feel like you are part of a proper war game, not just a game that wants to look like war. It makes CODmw2 seem like painballing versus MAG’s liberation of Iraq when you get into a full 256player domination.

The main downside is like I said, single sides for each team, no swapped spawning for ‘overtaken bases’, but the size of it all means that if you are getting bored, you just spawn somewhere else (if you are willing to leave your squad a team member down) and go carry on the fight from another angle.

Don’t get me wrong COD is good, a refined and quickly playable game, many more perks and weapons plus the meelee knife is far better, but doesn’t come close to hiding in the bushes with a sniper rifle, noticing someone trying to sneak up on you and waiting in the thickest part to creep behind and knife them instead.

Did I mention APC’s Tanks Helicopters? you can drive and take control of weaponry in those, take out mortar batteries and sam sites, roadblocks, destroy/repair bridges…

I could go on and on, but it’s this simple:

CODmw (& mw2) good single player online, with a little teamwork consisting of everyone running in and wiping out the enemy.

MAG larger teams split into seperate squads and co-operation NEEDED to attack as well as defend.

If you like shooters, GET IT! And while you are at it, get a mic if you haven’t done so yet, because the number of times you will shout at the screen — “sniper took me out on the rooftop by point B, he’s hiding behind the crates! I need a medic!”

    OR

“Behind you >-name-< two guys coming round the left building, sniper on the tower is down, move in!"

and you don't want to do that when they can't hear you do you?
