Xbox 360 System update released - Contains no new features

It’s a crazy system update frenzy today. Microsoft has released a new system update for their Xbox 360 console. Unfortunately, it only addresses numerous ‘interruption issues’ that were present and does not bring any new features to the system.

While we don’t want to encourage any heated war of words between PS3 and Xbox 360 owners, we feel as if PS3 owners will be the happier of the two this morning, following their 2.70 firmware update. Having said that, Xbox 360 still has the superior party chat feature which PS3 owners are waiting for, so maybe it’s not too bad, eh?

As reported by VG247, the post from Major Nelson states: ”This update addresses interruption issues that some Xbox LIVE users may have experienced when playing a limited number of Xbox 360 games. There are no other changes or enhancements in this update…in other words no new features. This update will be rolled out to all Xbox LIVE members around the world over the space of a few hours, so you may not get prompted for the update immediately. ”

Update is available to download now.

After installing the update, my system would freeze after 4 minutes of activity. after next power up I had three red lights and now have to send the system in for repair.”

    • Lee says:

The three red lights (also known as the Red Ring of Death) is simply a general hardware failure, generally caused by overheating. It’s possible your xbox just decided that now was the time to die (due to something else). Mine’s experienced the red ring ONCE, but after a reboot things worked normally again and I haven’t seen it since.

I doubt the update caused the red ring, just saying.

That’s odd, the same thing happened to mine. I updated it, walked out of the room to grab the phone, immediately returned and my box had the red rings.

    • scott says:

OMG so it was the update that gave me the red lights!
I too now have the red lights appear when i boot up and if i don’t, the 360 crashes after a few minutes.

      Microsoft are FAIL!!!!

  2. Travis says:

This update also crashed my 360. After the patch the console froze about 30 seconds after the update finished installing, causing a checkerboard pattern on the display over the dashboard. When I reboot I get the red ring.

It was an original launch 360 (may have been the last one out there), so it is out of warranty. After talking with xbox support for 2 hours they have agreed to fix it at no cost, it helped refering to this post where others had the same problem.

my neighbor and I got the ring of death after this update as well.

We both have our Xbox 360s in a well ventilated area. I do not think it was a heat problem.

I think something went wrong with the update.

  4. Ashley says:

SAME thing happened to me!!! I installed the new update and right after it rebooted the system froze and i got the red ring!!!

  5. Oh OH says:

My xbox has just red ringed for the first time, my xbox has always been bulletproof up till now….this update sux.

    I’m experiencing the same problem.
The update was downloaded some days ago and on April 8th the system froze whilst I was playing Halo Wars.
After a re-boot I got the three red lights. After a second reboot the system fired up but crashed after 4-5 minutes.
I’ve tried unplugging all peripherals and experience the crash if I’m playing a game or if the Xbox is just idle.
Xbox is 18 months old, well looked after, well ventilated and level. I’ve just e-mailed the Xbox web site and am eagerly awaiting their response.

      Update:
I called the Xbox helpline yesterday after receiving an e-mail from MS advising me to do so.
The Xbox 360 has a three year warranty where Ring-Of-Death problems are concerned.
I have been given a fault reference number and am now awaiting the neccessary e-mails that allow me to return my Xbox 360 to Microsoft via UPS.
I suspect the recent update is creating a few service issues for MS….

I got the red light too!!!

  8. Veritas says:

I pretty much was calling mine in when I first posted 12 days ago. They took it back no problem. I wonder if the update really did cause all the red rings and if there is now a spike in repairs. When I tried to go to the 360 repair website that day, it had crashed. Has Microsoft issued any new updates since the last one?

    • Ashley says:

But if they send an update…how would we even be able to download it?
      Xbox wont even turn on…
:o( I wish they would just acknowledge the problem and send a disc!

I sent my Xbox 360 in for repair. I sould get back on Thursday. It only took 3 days for them to fix and ship my Xbox and I am getting the same one back. I had 3 red lights once before because of overheat and I got a different Xbox that time.

It makes me think that this problem was not hardware. Also, I found out how to check the error code and my error code was 0020. I could not find anything online that said what that error code stood for.

  9. xbox 360 owner says:

oh my god same thing happen to me . i was just playin then i suddenly got three red lights

  10. Luke says:

I haven’t been on my XBOX for about 4 days. My friend came over by me, and we were going to play Halo 3 LIVE. I tested my connection and right before it ended it asked for an Update. I did the update. Right when the update loading bar reached the end it lost picture and audio. And it had 3 red rings around the power button. I am going to call the help line and complain because it is clear that the update is causing the XBOX to crash. Today my friend was going on his XBOX and did the update, the exact same thing happened. He quickly unplugged it and rebooted and it worked. Luckily, the update didn’t get to install properly. So now we can’t use XBOX Live. This is quite a problem.

    Luke.
