If you are the owner of a Verizon BlackBerry 8830, then you will be pleased to learn that the handset is getting an official update, OS 4.5 Firmware Update. Phones Review mentioned that they would have thought that with the 9630 just around the corner Verizon would stop supporting the 8830, but they still want to give the phone one last upgrade.
Engadget tell us that currently the Verizon BlackBerry 8830 uses v4.2, hopefully OS 4.5 will offer a few cool features. Sprint has already released firmware version 4.5 for its 8830, so Verizon seems a little late to the party.
You have to wonder why Verizon was lagging behind Sprint with the update, one thing is certain; the BlackBerry 8830 is not going out without a fight. Will users of their old BlackBerry choose to stay with the aging model or will they decide to upgrade to the 9630?

Just released 4/22/09 be prepared for long upgrade time.
Loaded 4.5 to my 8830 the other day and now the response time is awful. If you start pushing multiple buttons to try to get the handheld to work faster, they are buffered and can cause some interesting results. Beware going to 4.5. So far, it is not worth it.
