PS3 Firmware 2.70: Your impressions on Text Chat?

We have just informed you about the release of PS3 Firmware 2.70. It’s available to download right now and it adds the Text Chat feature to the XMB which also works in-game. What are your impressions of it?

I know the majority of PS3 users are waiting for the elusive Cross-game Voice chat feature, but this is a good start from Sony and we are sure that feature is well in the works.

This Text-Chat has a pretty nice interface to it, not the best we feel, but pretty nice. We think the ability to use this whilst in-game is going to make life a lot easier for gamers who are used to sending messages a lot. Take Call of Duty for instance, sending countless ‘title-only messages’ to users who cannot connect to parties for whatever reason is very annoying. This new Text-Chat feature will combat that for sure, as if the interface is already running in the background, all that is needed is a quick press of the PS button to let your buddy know that your having issues connecting to him, rather than take the hassle of sending a standard message or even having to use your cellphone. (We have..countless times)

Other examples of good uses of this feature will be on Killzone 2. We all know that the game doesnt support parties yet and trying to find out whether your friend is going Helghast or ISA can be very annoying. Again, the Text-Chat will make life simpler for you.

While we repeat this is no Voice-chat that everyone wanted, it’s still a good effort from Sony and a great addition for PS3 users, so there really is no need to complain about it.

Text Chat: Nice idea - mostly poor implementation. The 20-30 character limit is hugely annoying - you can’t even form a complete sentence without flooding the channel…

Also in a normal stream of conversation I was absolutely baffled by what it chose to censor out by replacing the text with asterisks… I type in “lulz” it censors the “lul”, or even 1234…etc… to count how many chracters are allowed and it censors out the numbers. It’s not like people can’t get around it by typing the word with spaces in between anyway.

I like how the state of the is persistant and the fact that it can be used in game, but the oppressive character limit and censoring has got to go!

    - No thanks, I like my console to actually “work” and frankly think the exclusives on PS3 are *much* better… Plus I hate paying extra for online gaming, wireless, rechargeable controllers, small hard drives, etc…

That’s nice low but we’re talking about the present here, and the well-publicized failure rates of the *current* generation of hardware is real and not imagined…a

That said, if I was a fanboy, I wouldn’t be so critical of the latest update, now would I?

Oh and Microsoft doesn’t? From the information I’ve gathered over the past 4 years, apparently Microsofts hardware and software are both crap. RRoD and Vista are both fine examples.

Microsoft is a bad company, and anybody affiliated with it should feel bad.
