Smartphones are great devices when we first unpack them out of their boxes, but as with most things, we want them to be fantastic, and this is where apps come in. These applications allows your handset to become so much more than it was from the moment that you purchased them. The iPhone seemed to start this trend off, and with the launch of Apple’s App Store things were about to get so much better.
There is no denying that RIM produces great handsets with its Blackberry’s, but they are a bit late to the app party. The BlackBerry Storm like the iPhone relies on apps to make it more than the sum of its parts, and RIM has now put something together to make their handsets compete with the likes of the iPhone. BlackBerry Mobile App World was launched yesterday at CTIA Wireless 2009, and we decided to have our first look.
BlackBerry App World is like iTunes where it allows you to browse, purchase and then download an application direct to your BlackBerry handset. Before you get started, you will need to download the storefront. Once this is done a BlackBerry App World icon will appear on your homescreen.
The system works much the same way as the Apple App Store, but Blackberry still have a long way to go with the Mobile App World. It is early days for this new service, so as you would expect there are not that many apps available yet, but they will come.
The interface is not as smooth and slick as the App Store, but Apple does have a head start. One problem that users might have a problem with is the fact that you can only pay with PayPal with BlackBerry Mobile App World.
How do you think the two of these compares with each other?
