The biggest story of the day and will also be big news tomorrow is the Conficker worm, which is the latest worm that self-updates and makes it very hard to avoid. Researchers at eEye Digital Security have responded to this current threat and have developed a detection engine that will run a network scan to detect hosts that are vulnerable or compromised to Conficker.
The company has worked on measures to protect users and now organizations can download a free utility from eEye.
This utility has been built around the company’s Retina Network Security Scanner; the utility will detect if a host has been compromised by the Conficker Worm and malicious botnet, or if you do not have the MS08-067 Patch applied.
The Conficker worm only attacks PC systems that run on Windows XP and Vista, which utilizes a variety of attack vectors, it will then transmit and receive payloads, this includes portable media devices such as USB thumb drives and hard drives and software vulnerabilities like MS08-067. The Conficker worm can also spawn remote access backdoors and then attempt to download malware to infect the system further.
