The rumors of a new Apple iPhone just seems to be on a day by day basis now, and the news that Apple are allowing stores to sell unlocked version of the 3G iPhone seems to back up the rumor. Apple normally allows this when they wish to sell all of its old stock of handset before a new model is launched.
According to itproportal, AT&T have already started to sell unlocked 3G iPhones, the 8GB model is selling for $599 while the 16GB version is selling for $699. AT&T is only allowing one handset per customer.
Apple US retail stores have also started to offer unlocked 3G iPhones. European countries also have unlocked 3G iPhones for sale; they are also allowed to purchase as many handsets as they wish.
From April 3, O2, Apple and Carphone Warehouse will be selling SIM-Free Apple iPhones in the UK, also a clear sign that they are in a rush to shift all of the old stock. UK website Play.com has now been selling the unlocked 3G iPhone for about a week now.

not that i wouldn’t like to see a new improved iphone, but “Apple normally allows this when they wish to sell all of its old stock of handset before a new model is launched” is it normal practice if we’ve only done this once before?
Well, the T&C on Carphone Warehouse’s website still say “iPhone 3G is restricted to use on the O2 network”.
