Call of Duty 5: World at War has been a popular game from the start, but fans have been missing their choice of weapons and have been begging for a return to Modern Warfare. We know that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be released later this year, but there have been reports that Call of Duty’ will be dropped on Modern Warfare 2.

Game Central Online wanted to get to the bottom of this rumor, so they asked Activision why they decided to change the name. Surprisingly a spokesperson got back to them and gave them the reason why they have dropped the name Call of Duty.

Activision feels that Modern Warfare has taken on a life of its own, and as a result has become their main focus. The new game is planned to be released on November 10, 2009, rest assured once the game comes out we will be giving you a full review.

The new game will be available on the Xbox 360 and the Sony PS3, do you care that Call of Duty is being dropped, and do you think that Activision are making the right choice?

So you have been waiting for some time for what will now be called Modern Warfare 2, so why not tell us, “what weapons do you want” in the new game?

They probably dropped “Call of Duty” from the title because people keep calling World at War CoD5 and this one CoD6. People are DUMB.

  • http://prnews killer

They dropped Call of Duty because of having to do modern isnt always the best when its all about ragheads yes ww2 weapons suck but the enemy are alot better than ragheads so i hope they make call of duty sci fi or something else just as long ragheads are not envolved.

  • Andy

Ok, I personaly think that it is just dumb that they would drop the Call of Duty, I mean the franchise has already built a name for it self and non hardcore gamers might not reconise that well and may not think that its a sequal to cod:mwf

  • VinTheDean

I am glad. This way this becomes a new series in the Modern Era and leaves that WW2 Era in the past were it belongs.

I loved COD4:MW because of the modern weapons. I skipped COD:WAW because they want back to WW2.

I know what I am going to be playing next fall. Ratchet and Clank and MW2.

  • Mark

I’m note entirely convinced that they can actually live upto the hype. Killzone2 has raised the bar to such a degree, they will have to pull something REALLY special out for COD MW2, and I simply don’t think a multiplatform title that has to cater for Xbox’s last-gen limitations cuts it anymore.

  • Mat

Killzone 2 is a good game but has like a 50% smaller fanbase then Modern Warfare on the 360.

  • Dale

im sorry but your an idiot, “last gen limitations” ive got a 360 and atm im saving my dosh to get a ps3 for killzone 2, hopefully over the easter holidays but I think you need to understand what “generation” means, the wii, ps3 and 360 are in the same generation saying “last gen limmitations” makes no sense what so ever, especially since the last gen systems graphics are a pile of crap compared to the 360′s any way. So how you some how think that the 360 is last gen is beyond me.

  • adam

They can change the name, non the less people will still call it call of duty 6

  • silent sniper

I think dropping “Call of Duty” is a big mistake. I mean then it is not Call of Duty anymore but that other game. I am a COD lifer and it just would not be the same. One of the reasons I hold COD in higher standards than other games is its abillity to connect with the player. Once a person plays the whole COD line they get used to the name. If I had never played one of the games before I would be less likely to pick up a copy. That is because I would have heard stories of how good COD is and having seen that they dropped the title, would wonder what else they dropped along with it.

When the title is changed, that usually means the game has been changed enough to make it different enough from the rest to no longer apply as a COD but just another Activision game. I know it is just a name, but I am now having doubts on whether to get the game or not. It is a proven fact that with merchandise you put the store brand in a premium brands box and vice versa, the store brand will be ranked higher even though and were not willing to accept that they did not get the brand they thought they got. If you put MW2 in the “store brand box”, lifers and Cod followers will be less willing to accept it as the wonderful game it is sure to be. The game will, in essence, have to make its own reputation because it will not inherent COD’s like the rest have.

I hope they keep the name. It is what many have grown to love.

  • silent sniper

The name is very relevant because it is the call that the AMERICAN and BRITISH soldiers took to fight. It is more relevant in this case than the rest because who would want to fight against the brutal enemies the terrorists are? They answered the call when no others would, (amazingly I am against the Iraq War) that is courage. At least the Germans kept there prisoners ALIVE.

PS: COD has always been realistic, so I would set my sights more on WW1 than Sci Fi if I were you.

  • Mat

silent sniper stop being such a whine-ass cry baby and realize they dropped Call of Duty to shorten up the title and everyone by now already knows it’s modern warfare..

  • silent sniper

First, they have had longer titles before and no problem with length.

Second, you may wish to reread what I said and see that I was actually making a point, not whining. Not once did I say anything about being sad that the title was changed or that I would boycott the game or anything. It was more warning prediction than anything else.

Third, I do realize that they have changed the name. I am also wondering what they removed/added to make it that much different to need to drop the name. ( I pose this question to you. If Guitar Hero for example dropped the title “Guitar Hero” its newest one would just be called “Metallica”. That doesn’t sound as fun any more does it?)

  • TJ Oceans

Guitar Hero is in a different league. There artists and is based upon music. CoD and MW2 are based upon war which doesn’t quite work the same.
Call of Duty has gained a reputation as a WW1/WW2 game title. Thus Modern Warfare 2 makes sense.

I like the sound of Modern Warfare 2. It also shows how they’re not afraid to move away from a title because it’s ‘known’. CoD wasn’t known on the first one but you all thought ‘Wow this is a great game to play’. Either way it doesn’t matter what name it had, as long as it it the best first person shooter out there!

  • silent sniper

What I was trying to say about the Guitar Hero thing is that without the name, anyone new might think it was just a knock-off of the real thing.

Call of Duty actually gained most of its fame with Modern Warfare even though most of its game are WWII (No WWI).

I agree that it shows they are confident that they can move away from the name that got them where they are.

I haven’t heard any definite on the name drop so at the moment I am just assuming that people started rumors because they didn’t see Call of Duty in the trailer. (I know that I may just be behind so if I am please post a link to the website where it was announced BY ACTIVISON that the name was dropped.)

  • Mitchell

I fully agree with silent sniper and for all you retarded fucking 12 year olds out there dont bitch at me for what i am about to say. YES I will still get the game but it will not be the same and I wont enjoy it as much as if it were Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. It could be the greatest game i have ever played but if it dosent say Call of Duty on the box I just wont enjoy it as much Call of Duty just adds that special feel to the game. IF YOU DONT AGREE I DONT GIVE A FUCK DONT LEAVE HATE COMMENTS.

  • silent sniper

Well one person knows what I’m talking about…

  • The FNG

I can’t wait for this game, it looks amazing!

Still agree with silent sniper and Mitchell though, it will feel as if something is missing while playing the game.

For me Call of Duty is an established brand and I want to feel like I am playing the next in their series, which Modern Warfare 2 has a firm place in after the major success of it’s predecessor.

One other thing, if they do drop COD from the title, will there be another COD game released at the same time as MW2? Because if not I see even less of a point in dropping the name!

I’d love Activision to put this to the vote with a poll on their website, I’d be interested to see the percentages!

  • Ferginator

YA UR RITE EVERYONE GOT MIXED UP SO THEY GET CONFUSED SO INFINITY WARDS HAD TO CHANGE IT JUST TO MODERN WARFARE 2 SO NO ONE CAN GET CONFUSED…

ITS ALSO A GOOD WAY TO START SOMETHING LIKE THE TRANSITION FROM WW2 TO NOW MODERN WARFARE AND MAYBE FUTURISTIC WARFARE ONES ARE NEXT AFTER THIS AND 2 OR 3 OTHER GAMES OF MODERN WARFARE

  • silent sniper

That would be interesting to see the percentages, but the people like us would probably not like the numbers that come out of it. Frankly, people that have played and enjoyed all of the COD games are few and far in between. A good number of people that bought MW were just Halo players who saw something with the word “modern” in it. I can’t tell you how many people I know that had never played COD until MW and then refused to buy WAW because it went back to WWII. They will want ti to have a name change so that they can have a new game, now that Halo is finished (or at least appears to be). If you go through many of the posts on this website, they say how they want COD in the future! or COD in space! Or even COD with laser guns only and fighting aliens and mutants. These people need to realize that because they want that stuff, there are games like Halo and Fallout. There are also people that actually like the history an realism involved in the game. Basically, what I am trying to say, is that people should go buy those games that have everything they want, already in them, rather than try to ruin COD for those that like the game the way it is.

  • Josh

I agree with Romeo if he is tellin the truth, an buy the way it is officially modern wrfare 2 not ‘cod MW2′,

romeo that wouldnt be the only reson they dropped it because otherwise why would they get activivsion publish it, they could go off a make it independently an make millions.

I dont really care thAt much if its only MW2 just aslong as they keep the same style as cod4. it is pretty dumb tho because the first one was called, ‘ CoD4: Modern Warfare so it woldv’e made sense to keep cod in it BUT WHO CARES!!

  • WOW

Dumbasses. It doesnt impact the game at all and if you say a name being there or not being there will actually affect the experience of playing the game, you need to shut up and gtfo. Its sad to think a name has such a sway over you weak minded people. The game could be called “Nuckfuggin Fuggerwucks” and as long as it is fun the fuckin name does not matter

  • WOW

YES! A smart person posting a good response! Not this sniper joker

  • Reason

Wait… WHAT! The Germans kept their prisoners alive??? What history book have you been reading. The Germans excecuted people left and right. There was this little thing called the Holocaust… Did you forget?

OH and, they probably dropped CoD from the name because Modern Warfare is so different from the other CoD games. It’s better, and has more weapon choices. In the future they may have a World at War 2 without CoD, becuase as you may or may not have noticed, they left out the 5 on World at War.

At least they didnt call it Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare 2…

  • Reason

The whole point of this article is that it is NOT CoD: MW2, its just modern warfare 2…

  • minxamo

i just hope that they aren’t doing it because of some arrogant idea that their game is above the call of duty brand. but other than that, its just a name, it makes no difference to the gameplay so i’m not bothered

  • minxamo

as far as i know activision haven’t announced that they are officially drop the name (maybe so that they have the choice to pick it up again?) but considering how widespread this has become, and activision haven’t denied it, it is most likely true.

  • minxamo

i dont know about you but i don’t play a game for its title

  • Chuckie Cheese!

    Hush.

  • http://yahoo.com Chuck

I’ll admit you have a point when you say you’re not going to buy the game, but I would say that you are one of very few who feel that way. The title of the game doesn’t make an ounce of difference in how good the game actually is. Even though it doesn’t have Call of Dut of the front, it still says Modern Warfare, and for this game that is far more important. Fans of the first CoD4, and I think we’ll agree that there are MANY fans of it, will most definately get this game because they know what was given to them in the first one and they loved it. Besides, CoD doesn’t gaurantee anything. Everybody bought World at War, played it for a while, liked it, then went back to CoD4. So in this case, the Modern Warfare title carries a ton more weight with gamers because the last Modern Warfare game was great, but the last Call of Duty game was just pretty good.
