Dell’s new Nehalem workstations and 11G servers

Dell, the second largest computer maker has unveiled a new range of enterprise computing products; these include servers and workstations and will be using the new range of Intel Nehalem-based Xeon chips and storage arrays.

According to vnunet, Dell has introduced this new line-up as part of its strategy to help customers bring down costs through power management savings and efficiency. One of the most important parts of the announcements was Dell’s new 11th generation (11G) PowerEdge server line-up.

This new range will consist of a twin-socket tower with rack and blade formats running Intel’s Xeon 5500 chips, Dell says that the new server will have a significant boost in performance, as well as reducing the amount of energy needed to run them. The 3 new format Precision workstations and the 11G servers are now available. The official launch of Intel’s Nehalem-based Xeon chips will be next week.

A number of computer makers are already using the new Intel Nehalem-based Xeon chips, like the Nehalem based Apple Mac Pro.

  1. Thank you for your post.

Actually, Dell introducing Nehalem based products is very interesting. The reason would mainly be because of the advantages provided by Nehalem processors.

While the previous one Penryn was a die shrink of an existing architecture, Nehalem is a brand new architecture built on the same 45nm process as Penryn.

Though Nehalem is a new architecture, it is still built on the same 45nm process that debuted with Penryn, it provides a high performance and an excellent power usage which is 30% lesser than the former.
