Sony has announced that they will be releasing new development tools for the PS3 in North America, Europe and Japan. Sony state these new tools will be cheaper and work more efficiently, which will be pleasing news for developers.
According to Videogamer, the new Reference Tool Models are priced US $2,000, Euro 1,700 and JPY 200,000 respectively. An official statement from Sony reads: ” Having the same form factor as the commercially available PS3, the new Reference Tool models allow advanced game programming and more efficient computer graphics rendering.”
“With its more affordable pricing, this new model will appeal to a broader range of developers and publishers, and will help to provide a more streamlined game development environment, further accelerating the game development for PS3.”
So, this hopefully means that more PS3 developers will take this news on board and start work on more PSN titles. There are a lot of great titles on the way to the Playstation Network. Unknown developers such as Frozenbyte will be pleased to hear that developing just got cheaper. Their upcoming PSN title Trine, is one that we are looking forward to.

This is good news for Devs.
As for Sony’s charge to the Publishers for bandwidth ($.16 per GB) - This is one of the reasons that PSN remain FREE for consumers.
Great business moves by Sony.
