GDC: OnLive – Details and Screenshots released
By: Alan Ng | March 24, 2009 | Leave a CommentOne of the biggest stories from this years Game Developers Conference was the announcement of OnLive – a service that will allow gamers to play high-end games on their TVs and PCs without the need of any console hardware.
According to VG247, the streaming service makes use of ‘Cloud Computing’ and could allow gamers with basic PC specs to play the most demanding of games such as Crysis. The process involves controller inputs being uploaded to a remote server, on which your game is being played. What’s relayed on your TV screen is an actual video of play, sounds pretty technical eh?
Requirements include a 1.5mbps connection for SD play, and a 5.0mbps connection is required for 720p. Lag has been reduced to ‘one milisecond in terms of video encoding’.
If this project works, it is going to offer so many options and new ways to play your favourite games. Let us know what you think about the whole concept. We were just getting over Zeebo, but now this is even bigger. You can view some screenshots here, and a demo video of OnLive in action here
