For those of us who thought that the only battle in the gaming market was between Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PS3, then you would be wrong, as the handheld market is even more competitive. There are a few to choose from, such as the Nintendo DS, Sony PSP and the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch.
Who would have thought a few years ago that a Smartphone would feature alongside the Nintendo DS as a handheld gaming device? There is no denying that the Nintendo DS is king and completely dominates the market, but the iPhone 3G will not let the DS have its own way.
Nintendo understand that the iPhone is becoming a popular tool to play games on and are not ones to get too complacent, which is why they are to launch the DSi model, which will ship in the US in April.
However Apple understand that they also need to keep developing as games are getting more demanding on its hardware, and rumors of the next Apple iPhone to get a Multi-core graphics shows that they are committed to dethroning the Nintendo DS and also wipe the floor with the Sony PSP.
