Apple’s New 17-inch MacBook Pro: Review, Specs and Gaming

There are so many gaming laptops to choose from, such as the Dell XPS M1730 and the Alienware M9750, but it is an impossible task to know which the best one is. Apple (AAPL) are hoping that packing the new 17-inch MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM and a top spec video card will give them the title.

I will tell you this, the new MacBook Pro is not going to compete with Windows based laptops when it comes to games, but it is the ultimate one that Mac users have been waiting for. The great thing about the new 17-inch MacBook is how energy efficient it is, offering up to 8 hours of battery life per charge.

The larger MacBook Pro starts at $2,799, with a number of configurations for you to choose from, you can have the MacBook just how you like it. Computer World had one sent to them, so they could put it the test. Their review unit had the faster 2.93-GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB solid-state disk drive, that would cost you $4,849. You would have to be a serious gamer to speed that kind of money.

I’ve had my Dell XPS M1730 for one year now. Two days before that one year - one of the RAID hard drives failed. Of course this thing was set up as RAID0 from the factory, so there goes all the data on my primary computer. Lovely.

This drive failure occurred three weeks after having the power adapter (brick) replaced due to a defect as well. Put that together with crappy video drivers which greatly hindered the performance I SHOULD have been getting out of this laptop (with Vista certainly not helping) - it’s currently in storage and I’m typing this out on my new MACBOOK PRO.

Never thought I’d ever own a MAC (I’ve been tech support of Windows PCs for my whole life). Bit of a learning curve, but I don’t think I’ll ever look back.

My wife got her first Mac (last year’s MacBook Pro) in December 2008, and replaced a Dell Inspiron notebook (that again we were forced into buying with Vista).

Thanks Dell and Microsoft Vista - you’ve converted me, and neither of you will ever see another cent of my money again.
