Intel CPU caching vulnerability and new SMM exploit
By: Peter Chubb | March 20, 2009 | Leave a CommentThere is a serious exploit going around, and could become a serious security threat for us all. Joanna Rutkowska from Security Researchers is planning to release a paper called + exploit code for a new SMM (System Management Mode) exploit, which is installed via an Intel (INTC) CPU caching vulnerability.
The worrying thing about this exploit is that it hides itself in the SMM space. The problem is that SMM is not controllable by any Operating System. The OS cannot override or disable System Management Interrupt (SMI) calls.
There is only one way for you to know what is running in SMM space, which is to disassemble the firmware of your computer, something that is not an easy task. So let us put it a simple way, SMI has more importance over any OS call. The details of this report is very in-depth and would be better reading for yourself, read more from the source link below.
