At the recent Apple (AAPL) iPhone OS 3.0 preview event a number of new features was announced, one of those being support for push background notifications. It had been assumed that Apple would have went live with background notifications towards the end of last year, but as they retooled the background notification system, it did not happen.
The new push-data service will mean that the iPhone application can receive updates from a server, that data is then pushed to the handset. The system will then notify the user that there is new data or messages without even starting up the app.
IntoMobile have raised a good question, “is it a good compromise on true multi-tasking?” Apple have said that true multi-tasking is where apps will run and keep drawing power from the processor, even when not in use, this also puts a drain on the battery, which already drains at an alarming rate.
