Virgin Mobile are not ones to be left behind when it comes to its mobile phone range, which is why the USA arm of the company are planning to introduce touchscreen handsets. Virgin Mobile USA CEO said that this is part of a move into “smarter” phones.
Virgin Mobile have based its brand on younger people who have low to middle income brackets, and it is for that reason why Virgin choose to stay out of the Smartphone market. CEO Dan Schulman said that although the iPhone (AAPL) and BlackBerry (RIMM) are a popular handset, they only make up for 20 percent of the total handsets sold.
However, Schulman believes that this figure is set to rise over the next three to five year. As yet there are no details as to what the phone will be called and what features it will have. One thing is certain, Virgin will keep an eye on the economy and weigh up what consumers are able to afford.
