Official: AT&T contract-free iPhone 3G on sale March 26

We have been waiting some time for AT&T (T) to finally confirm that they will offer a contract-free iPhone, and nine months later confirmed that they are to offer “no-commit” iPhones, and that they will go on sale from Tuesday, March 26.

The 8GB iPhone 3G from Apple (AAPL) will now cost $599 and the 16GB iPhone 3G will have a price tag of $699. Not sure how many people will pay the hefty price, especially in this current economic climate. Looking at those figures, we see that AT&T has been subsidizing $400 of the cost of the handset for those who take out a two-year contract.

The no-commit option is limited to just one handset per customer, and as you would assume are still locked to AT&T. If you have been wanting to have the ultimate handset, but did not want to commit to a two-year contract, then seems like AT&T have just gave you the excuse you need to purchase one.
