iPhone 3.0 Firmware and Download Release Date

iPhone 3.0 Firmware and Download Release Date

By: Daniel Chubb | March 18, 2009 | 102 Comments

The iPhone 3.0 firmware was previewed today at Apple’s event and while it introduced some features that should have been there from the start, we also saw that it’s all about the App Store.

Apple’s new App Store business models will change the way users buy and use apps. Think about buying additional levels to games, eBooks, magazine subscriptions and much more.

If the iPhone was judged just on it’s application range and abilities then it would win hands down, but there is much more needed than this and this is where the Palm Pre may take a little market share (or some will say a lot).

The iPhone 3.0 download is not yet available and we hear that the release date will be in the summer. No exact date has been released at the time of writing. If you know more about the iPhone 3.0 release date then share in the comments.

I get the feeling this website is funded by Palm.

  • harold

i get the feeling that ur apple funded lmao come on pre is better u can multitask. and real keyboard and it has 2X the ram of iphone 3g which that combined with sprints faster network makes it 3X faster than an iphone. look up the article on pre loading a web page(big12.com i think)vs iphone palm pre took 8 seconds iphone 31 seconds..wow!!!

  • kyle

i heard it will be realeased in april

  • dazone

the beta version is leaked. but i will wait for the real one …

  • grass

I don’t see the advantage to a real keyboard. It’s much harder to type with phone keyboards than it is on the screen with the iphone. I’ve tried both and I have big fingers. I think most of the people who make the assessment that the iphone keyboard isn’t any good haven’t tried it more than once. Though more ram and being able to multi task would highly improve the iphone.

  • cole

The beta wasn’t leaked. Definitely available in apples developer center.

  • kballs

the beta leaked! i have it and am using it. the full version will be available april 17th. mark your calendar!!! it is everything they promise!!!

  • LOL

    OMG fanboy, breath!

  • rkdunn

does it possibly have spell check in the email and sms applications? can’t seem to find this information out

  • Vanchu

The power of the iphone is nice, its not great. I didnt buy the iphone because its some “super phone”, I bought it because it looks great, its easy to use. I have seen many phones with keyboards and they’re all ugly.I would rather have a nice car with an ok engine than a shit box with a sweet engine, but thats just me. In closing I would like to say that multi tasking would be nice….

  • duswdav

i’ve had the iphone 3g for 3 months now, coming from a winmo device(touch dual) and i’ve seriously been considering switching back because of the keyboard issue. its not that i can’t type on it, its that when i really need to “jam out” some serious text, i find myself misspelling words or the iphone inserting incorrect words, way more often then i would have on my touch dual and its not even a full blown qwerty. it really is frustrating when the iphone’s kb doesnt want to cooperate. that being said, i do intend on keeping my iphone for the time being, i am improving my keyboardless typing everyday. so we will see.

  • Carl robinson

I have both an iphone and a htc g1. i understand that this upadte will be great but it still wont make it as good as the g1.

  • rami

i totally agree with Vanchu, id rather have a nice looking phone and a sliding keyuboard aint got a nice feel to it and if you think about it, i think it owuld be harder ot hold, and anyway once u have used tye keyboard on the iphone a few times it becomes second nature but would be ncie if it was abit faster sometimes it takes a goodportion of a second for it to respond when you click. anyone seen the keyboard on the new T3 mobile? in my opinion the only worthwhile sliding keyboard around check it out!

  • Poop

I too came to the iPhone from the Samsung BlackJack. While the Windows Mobile smartphones were lacking in many features, so was the iPhone. Most importantly is the Qwerty keyboard. the iPhone touch-qwerty suck big huge moose c***. I don’t care if you have fingers the size of kielbasas, you can never fat finger a word on the BlackJack. I fat finger 7 out of ten words every single time I type on the iPhone. You can’t compare a physical keyboard to a flat “virtual” keyboard…

  • Jon

    loading a web page(big12.com i think)vs iphone palm pre took 8 seconds iphone 31 seconds..wow!!!

You joker, i did it, under 5 seconds, and thats a phone thats full to the brim of software. Where did you get your info?

  • Braxxis

“If the iPhone was judged just on it’s application range and abilities then it would win hands down, but there is much more needed than this and this is where the Palm Pre may take a little market share”

You act like that’s all that was previewed. Apparently you are under-informed on what is being added besides Application abilities. Let me spell it out for you:

    1) MMS; Send GPS locations and contacts via SMS
    2) GPS capabilities for Turn by Turn w/ Voice directions.
    3) Landscape Keyboard in all apps. (bigger is better)
    4) Copy Paste
    5) Multiple Apps open at once
    6) Spotlight Search throughout Phone (Apps, Music, Contact, The web, etc.)
    7) Link your YouTube account to the native iPhone App.
Now all these new features, make it do the same exact tasks as the Pre.

Now.. for 31 second page load time? Your on crack considering I just opened a normal web page fully loaded in 6 seconds. (Pssst thats faster than the Pre’s 8 seconds)

    Downsides of the pre:
    1) Slide out keyboard. The buttons on those things are insanely small. Only usable by 13 year old girls with long finger nails.
    2) The Phones smaller, which means Smaller screen. Which makes it harder to view web pages, videos, etc.
    3) It’s thicker, and weighs more.
    4) It’s only on Sprint, who has a horrible network and even worse customer service.
    5) “Background Processing”… This will actually slow the phone down.

Im excited if the release is actually April 17th, that’s my b-day so happy b-day to me from Apple w00t!

  • Curbside

I certainly agree with Braxxis.. april 17th is perhaps the best day ever. Thats also my birthday. I think apple should have done these things when the iphone was frist introduce. They were not missed, but there certainly heplful, like cut copy & paste, on your phone. Undo(ing) by shaking the phone. Finally having MMS, meaning being able to send pictuers and videos through texts. And lots of other stuff that im pretty sure they didnt have time to mention in that what felt like a 2 hour video. I wouldnt hold my breath on a april 17th release, though it would be nice

  • MrBangboom

I had my iphone 3g for nearly 5 mounths now upgradi g from Nokia was such a relief for Internet after havin huge bills of Nokia leavin connectio. On all times anyways can’t say iPhone kb wasn’t frustating first week but after youl get quicker and quicker and in all honesty since I stopped using my pc (only for big Dowloads) I have noticed Im typing even faster thanOn. Desktop kb!!!!!! I’m willing to challenge any other kb out there LOL n who needs mutlitasking! It kills battery and always problematic rather have. A better experience than run 2 and now that copy n paste is available it’s even more ideal

  • Brian

    5 seconds on my iphone

  • Mack & Tosh

They are not releasing the 3.0 software on April 17!! They are gonna update on it at WWDC 2009 on June 8th at the Moscone West Center in San Francisco, CA..as well as introduce the third generation of the iPhone, and the 3rd iPhone is going to come with OS 3.0 already installed and OS 3.0 and the new iPhone should be available sometime in July of 2009!! Just like they did last year!

  • Mr X

    3.0 Firmware inclusions:

    1) Peer-to-peer connectivity over Bluetooth for gaming and other info-swapping.
    2) Paid apps will have the potential to be subscription fee-based, and can include optional paid content that can be bought from right inside the app.
    3) Developers can now build apps that call out to Google Maps, and can also finally bring Apple-blessed turn-by-turn to the phone.
    4) Devs can also connect with hardware accessories over in their apps now, such as a blood pressure monitor — or perhaps a keyboard? Connectivity works through the dock connector or over Bluetooth.
    5) Long-promised push functionality will at last be included, but apps won’t run in the background.
    6) Developers can add streaming video and audio to their apps, along with in-game voice use.
    7) Cut, copy and paste. At last! You can shake the phone to undo and redo the action, and it works with both text and photos, allowing Mail to send multiple photos at a time. (more here)
    8) MMS, along with forward and delete for multiple messages. (more here)
    9) A2DP stereo Bluetooth.
    10) Unlocked Bluetooth functionality on 2G iPod touch. (more here)
    11) Spotlight has been added to a new home screen page to the left of existing pages, allowing for universal search on the phone. (more here)
    12) Tethering is built into 3.0, and Apple will work with carriers on that — who will have the last say on its implementation, most likely.
    13) App Store will be available in 77 countries.
    14) Parental controls for TV shows, movies and App Store apps.
    15) Auto-login for WiFi hotspots.
    16) A new app called Voice Memos which lets you record notes and reminders.
    17) A revised Stocks app, with news stories and a landscape view.
    18) Landscape view available for Mail, Text and Notes.
    19) CalDAV support has been added to Calendar, along with subscriptions support in the .ics format.
    20) Apple’s major apps have all been expanded with search functionality.
    21) Note syncing to Mac and PC.
    22) YouTube account support.
    23) Form auto-fill.
    24) Phishing protection.
    25) Shake the shuffle iPod playback.

  • dustin

perfect example of my problems with the iphone keyboard…seriously, that was not the easiest thing to read.

  • jawz

On my iPod touch 2g, which has 30 gigs of clutter apps, music and videos it took 8 and a half seconds. Either your internet is painfully slow or your over exaggerating.

  • Jeffrey

I’ve been hearing that the release date is June 11, 2009.
Because I have some people that all say the same thing.

The new software will be available either free or $19.99 for iPhone customers.

For the iPod Touch users, it will be available for just $9.95.

This is a REALLY LOW price for all users and customers.
I have seen the new features it will include, and I gotta say it’s all worth it!

    Thanks, Jeff.

  • Jase

You should loose weight then you big fat Tw@t… I have tried pretty much all the different keyboards on the market, including the Omnia and the upcoming Pre. I have not seen anything that competes with the Iphone. Even if you are fat, the Iphone predictive text is the best around. I tried other phones/networks 4 times and each time went back to the Iphone. The only downfall of the Iphone is AT&T.

  • Nadz

Why would you want a phone with a stupid physical keyboard that takes half the screen and stays there when you don’t need it.

  • Poop

“fat finger” is an expression y’dope. I’m 130lbs. My point is the keys are too close together and the touch screen is too sensitive. What took me minute to write an email on the BlackJack takes me 5 minutes on the iPhone.

  • Poop

Because it’s easier to type with. For those of us with jobs that involves a large number of emails, it would be nice to have. When I had a BlackJack I could type and walk. Since the iPhone is so sensitive I need to stop walking to type accurately, since any jostling results in a typo. Now maybe there’s a technique that I don’t know about, but it shouldn’t be that hard.

  • Nadz

I type when i drive and i know that i shouldnt, however with a physical keyboard it takes amounts of effort (which add up over time) on your thumb and fingers to depress the buttons which can cause calluses and stress on your fingers and the key labels wear off too. Having said this it makes typing on the iPhone keyboard much faster and smoother. It is also much more intelligent with it’s pre emptive typing. One more point to add is the ease of navigating to words and letters in paragraphs it’s just a tap on the screen away.

    3 seconds on my iphone

  • Jagatuba

Three seconds on my phone as well. In fact, no difference in speed between 3G and wifi loading that site (big12.com).

  • harold

wow you are all clowns its not big12.com even my instinct loads that in 3 seconds. its http://www.big12sports.com a much more complicated site. pre does it in 8 seconds. and i dont expect any replies on this cuz iphone times will all be at least 3x slower so please if anyone has the courage please post your time.

    Palm pre: 8 seconds

  • Rob

You’re the clown who told everyone it was big12.com to begin with?! And my Palm Pre took 28 seconds to load http://www.big12sports.com, not 8 seconds. I love the Pre but if you’re going to argue and call people names, at least don’t lie to them.

  • Jagatuba

First of all, just because you posted the wrong website in your original post does not make me a clown for testing speed on that site. You are the one who posted it. Second of all, I’m highly skeptical of your alleged 8 second time since I went to this site on my laptop using Firefox with pipelining turned on and it took about 10 seconds. This would indicate to me that the Pre has some sort of pipelining by default, which is unlikely since some websites reject multiple requests which is why it is turned off by default in Firefox. But it’s really not worth arguing about unless you can prove your time. I mean I could say that my iPhone loaded it in 5 seconds, but that doesn’t make it so. Furthermore, Rob claims it took 28 seconds on his Pre which I find much more realistic since it took like 40 seconds on my iPhone. My guess is you are either a Palm fanboy or a rep.

  • Jagatuba

The auto-correct on the iPhone is fairly reliable catching about 90-95% of my typos, but you have to get used to it. The main thing is to trust it to make the corrections. It is an auto-correct function not auto-finish. That was my biggest adjustment since I went from a phone with auto-finish to the iPhone. Once I got used to letting the iPhone correct my typos and got out of the habit of trying to correct typos as I went I found that my texting speed at least doubled from what it was on the Blackjack.I also have no problems typing and walking at all. Sure my fingers bump other letters, and I my type domgwr, but as long as I don’t worry about it iPhone knows I meant to type finger and automatically inserts it when I hit space. The only shorter words are a bit more problematic however. The longer words are caught quite easily, but the shorter words sometimes aren’t caught. It least that has been my experience. Main thing is just trust the auto-correct and type away. One final suggestion. If you have been using the auto-correct on the iPhone in a way other than how it was designed (in other words like auto-finish like me) it’s best if you go into the settings and reset the dictionary, because it is likely that you fowled up the dictionary with non-words which will affect the auto-correct accuracy. Hope that helps.

  • harold

YOUR palm pre it hasn’t even come out yet how do YOU have a palm pre .. cought u in the lie

  • harold

CLaim is the key word. he has no pre as its not out yet!! second i have proof for all you fanboys heres the link: http://jkontherun.com/2009/03/12/palm-pre-webcast-tidbit-browser-nearly-4x-faster/

scroll down and you will clearly see the vid and how fast it loads. 8 seconds. and you say i cannot prove it well go ahead check out the site. let me know what you think remember pre has double the ram and a more powerful processor than iphone3g. gameover!!!

  • Jagatuba

Okay I did watch the video and that is fast. So it made me question how? How can it be faster than Firefox with pipelining turned on? Well there’s really little technical details out there on the Pre, but from what I could find it seems that the Pre uses a combination of prefetching and caching to load pages faster. It would be interesting to see that page loaded for the first time. As far as processing power and RAM, those two things weigh little in how fast a webpage loads. Load speeds are highly dependent on network speed and how the software handles and stores the data and information is received and stored. I have no more doubt that the Pre has a faster processor and more ram than the iPhone than I have that the next iPhone will be more powerful than the current. As far as being a fanboy… lol it’s ridiculous to argue about. We are ALL fanboys. Hell, I can’t even think of why I used the term in my first post in the first place. Perhaps because it seems to be a common term on this thread. But personally I am a fanboy of the iPhone… At the moment. It’s all about personal preference. The thing about preferences is that for every preference you have their are 10 million other people out there with exactly the opposite preference. Personally, after using the iPhone I highly doubt I’ll go back to a physical keyboard. I find them much more clumsy for me. Which highly weights my decision of whether or not I buy a new device including the Pre. Interestingly (for me any way), the guy in the video bumbles the g in big.

  • eli

    you can turn off dictionary

  • KawiKami

I want that sweet ass phone off of the movie “Echelon Conspiracy”. End of story. I love my iPhone, but I would kill to get that phone.

  • Nadz

Yep I totally agree just let the iPhone auto correct make the changes and then in the end make your corrections if need be. I also find that if you type whole and real words and not shotcutted Words like some people type in SMS messages you will get along much better with the iPhone auto correct and it will actually take you less time to type whole worded paragraphs than to the shortcutted words because typing shortcutted words make you fight with the auto on how it ought to be spelt acording to you this consuming more time.

    Typed on the iPhone.

  • Karma

Also, the whole keyboard thing. The guy demonstrating the Pre in the video messed up typing. The iPhone is wonderful and if you really don’t think you are accurate it highlights whatever key you are touching.

  • Rupe

What makes me laugh is you get all these people trying to say their phone or a new phone coming out is gonna be better faster etc than iPhone! Not the pre vs omnia or n96 vs android etc they always compare to iphone! Why is that do you think? It’s simple the iPhone may have it’s downsides but at the end of the day it’s obviously the benchmark phone to beat! Loads of supposed iPhone beaters have been launched since iPhone 3G but yet the pre isn’t being compared to an omnia, viewty, tocco or android is it?! Perfect the Iphone isn’t but unbeatable so far it still is!

  • raver_returns

multitasking is supposed to be in the 3.0 release

  • raver_returns

I have to deal every day with people that seem to think that texting on the phone is more important than paying attention to their driving. To you, Nadz, is sending or answering a freaking text message seriously worth endangering yourself (or more importantly the child in the car next to you)? I promise it will still be there when you stop. Your admitted behavior makes me ill.

  • chicken_eyebrow

wow, so many fanboys for pre and iphone, all i can say is that its just a phone! you’re all talking as if its what makes the world turn around, no its just something for contacting your friends or whatever, get a life.

  • StargazerLivesOniPhone

chicken_eyebrow Either you don’t own an iPhone or you paid too much for something you don’t use to more that 10 of it’s capacity.
I use my iPhone for much more than a phone. In addition to it’s basic function such as a full featured address book, Calendar, E-mail etc… I use it to keep track of hours and billing info for work I do on site (Cool little app called Jobs, Keep track of the hundreds of user names, Passwords, access codes and other sensitve info available to me with a couple of clicks (eWallet), Keep track of my trip mileage to and from job sites as well as gas and parking expenses and gas mileage (Vehical), Keep track of any myriad of tasks that are always waiting to be done (ToDo) Of course there is looking up all kinds of info on the internet… There are just too many things I do to go into here Oh an let’s not forget it’s my prime source of music when I am out and about. There are about 15 or 20 other apps I use on an almost daily basis, Database(s), Track of DVD/Music collection, Cooking Recipe’s at my fingertips etc etc… Bottom line is if you are just using as a phone you could have saved yourself several hundred bucks. lol.
Can’t wait to get 3.0 so I can start doing the rest of the things it should have been able to do from the start and some of the new features.

I guess it doesn’t like the “percent” symbol. In my previous post that should be 10 Percent at the beginning.

  • Hst

I don’t believe the pre will have the cisco VPN or any other client will it? This is a must for me..

  • Nadz

This is a technology review, so we are reviewing the iPhone which is a quantum leap in mobile phone/PDA systems, we’re advocating the pro’s of this device. Some people disagree and we say why we disagree with that. It’s not our life this device.

  • http://www.facebook.com dominicfinch

2.1 seconds on my ipod classic!!!

  • Sam

The Pre is nowhere NEAR as good looking as the iPhone, and I really doubt it’ll be as nice to use. That’s what matters to me. I haven’t used it of course, so I can’t comment on the tiny QWERTY keyboard, but it looks tiny and very hard to use. The iPhone keyboard, in portrait no less, was hard to use initially, but after a couple of days I have no problems with it at all.

  • Sam

But yeah, multitasking would be nice…

  • Martin

    Not without jailbracking..

  • Seth

No, you can turn it off and/or clear it.

  • S2J36

I tried that Big12.com which seemed to be about college football. and my iPhone took 6 seconds via Edge(T-Mobile). it took me longer to enter the web address then it did for the page to load. my friend has the blackberry storm and it wasnt that impressive. besides does the pre have apps like the iPhone. also if the rumors are true, we’ll be seeing another new iPhone soon. word is that the new iPhone will come loaded with apple’s 3.0 OS. and with all the added features of the new 3.0 OS. stick that up your A$$ palm

  • harold

ok my friend look its big12sports.com not big12.com (my mistake lol) big12.com it takes 4 second on my htc touch pro. go to this link http://www.big12sports.com
it is a much more complicated site the pre does it in 8 seconds and iphone in 30+ second. sprint has the best network they will be introducing the nations first 4g network. they are the most reliable and they have over 4X the 3g coverage of at&t. this is why apple and at&t are being sued because they are misleading customers about thier 3g coverage. dont believe me google apple law suit. stick that up ur a$$ apple

  • harold

you loaded a normal web page.. listen try big12sports.com it is a very complicated sight and it take over 30 seconds on iphone it takes 8 on pre. and on iphone it doesnt even load it correctly there are missing pictures. go to http://jkontherun.com/2009/03/12/palm-pre-webcast-tidbit-browser-nearly-4x-faster you;; see how fast pre is

  • Sam

I just tried that link, full strength 3G signal (O2-UK) and it took over a minute!

  • Logan?

1.Okay will it cost money to upgrade to 3.0
2.it toke me about 45 seconds to load the site while loading this on still and refreshing another page
3.and for those who like real keyboards it toke me maybe two months to learn to type on my iPhone and now I type faster and more acurate then before also iPhone keyboard buttons don’t wear off break or cause calluses on tips of fingers and it takes one hand to type unlike many other phones

  • Phil Mac

I love my iphone, but it replaced my Palm Treo, and I assumed it would be all around more high-tech. Kind of shocked to realize it had nothing comparable to docs-to-go, could not edit word & excel files, calendar nowhere near as flexible as palm, no provision for an external keyboard (the touch keys are fine, but try writing an article or novel chapter on the road with just your thumbs! ) – Hope 3.0 lives up to its promises and the iphone gets to be a better productivity tool… my treo effectively replaced a travel laptop for my particular purposes, but the iphone still can’t do it (which is really disapointing, bc it blows the palm away in so many other respects).

  • Jon

According to O2 UK the update will be released in July

  • Rob

I need to check this more often. Got me Harold… Not “my” PALM Pre, my “store’s” PALM Pre. Congrats on catching my use of the word “my”. The Sprint Store that I manage has had a Pre since late March to get us ready to sell it. And it’s still 28 seconds.

  • Charles

Sprint sucks so bad ! AT&T has a much better customer serice through apple when u have an iPhone and the 3g is way better than 1st generation and I’ve talked to slot of ppl with different competing companys versions of the iPhone and they h8 them ! Sprint is honestly the worst company ever and lost over 800,000 clients in the 3rd of 4th quarter ( when iPhone was released ). Their call centers r in India , ghetto, or china ! Everytime I call apple care they had someone that speaks PERFECT English for me to understand :) thanks apple iPhone with out u I would die !

  • heather

less that 5 seconds on my iphone!

  • bob staines

Got a G1 for work, not a bad phone but no way near as fun as my iphone

  • Nathan

Harold, have you actually used an iPhone to test the load time of the big12sports.com website? I’ve just run tests using the local network we have here as well as the 3G network and it loaded in 10 seconds with our local network and in 11 with the 3G.

All of the images are loaded correctly.

My guess is that the variance in load times is due to big12sports.com’s server and not the actual phone loading the site.

The point though is that the website you mentioned can be loaded in far less than 30 seconds and that this whole debate is not taking into consideration the factor of the server that the website in question is hosted on. This goes for either phone. You can’t compare one phone to the other without having the same access to the same server speed for the website you’re testing with.

    Just my thoughts.

  • Tyler

Arnt they improving the safari for the iPhone/Touch with the 3.0 update. Its supost to be much faster from what i heard.

  • me

Harold you are a major douche for arguing and so is ur crap sprint network end of story….

  • jb

I only have 2 words on why the iPhone is the best cell phone on the market and will continue to be the best phone on the market. “App Store”

and thats just 1st base lol
not only can you also sync your windows live and windows enterprise emails with the iPhone, but it is very well known for its amazing mobileme syncing..

does the pre have either of these?

sure i do agree that the multitasking is pretty bad ass, but seriously… you dont think that will be in an upcoming software update for the iPhone, you are mistaken. The iphone is only just at the beginning of its OS and is years ahead of the competition already.

  • stephanie

hahaha unless you are a business man
palm pre wont be much of a good investment
    and iphone is just kickass

  • Jiggins

ROFLMAO!!! You could not have said that better! After trying to type something that long on the Iphone keyboard that is what a message will look like if you’re a pro! Don’t get me wrong…I have an Iphone and I love it but that claim was outrageous! “Faster than a desktop kb”!! Abserd!!!!

  • Jiggins

Agree %110!! Just friggin’ call them! Or at your next stop (red light, gas station, destination, etc.) tell them you’re driving and have them call you when it’s convenient!

ha.. that harold is a winner. apple probably gets sued every day. that’s no big deal. i’ve managed an ATT store for a couple years now and the iPhone was the FIRST new thing of its stature to come out since the cell phone was invented in my opinion. before the iphone, name one phone with multi touch. better yet name one manufacturer that had even come up with it. so what if it has bugs. i can play final fantasy VII on a playstation emulator while i’m in a meeting!

  • shorty

so who’s right? june 10th or july 17th?

  • EYEFONE

Well, I have an Iphone, but I held out a while before getting one, and now, I hear there’ll be a new one out soon *sigh*..

It’s a great phone, but it lack some features as well.

Let me put this forth. Japanese Cell phones are still ahead of most all others.

Pretty much the average Japanese cell phone has:

•3.2 or greater quality on the camera(avg is around 4.0 now)
•Can already do video(like a few years ago!)
•Has a chip integrated in most phones which allows you to charge it up with money(via web account) and pay (by touch sensor) for things like groceries, gas, train tickets, restaurants and whatnot.
    •Already has copy and paste
•Can already do stereo bluetooth(like a few years ago!)(gotta jailbreak your Iphone for something similar)
•Has IRDA to exchange contact information(saves lots of time sharing your phone# or email addy with that hot chick you just met, or that new business contact)
•Has Television(now Iphone Japan has it, but you gotta buy some external clunky device)
    •Some models are waterproof
•Has accurate barcode/2D reader functionality(gotta jailbreak your Iphone for something similar)
•Has mini external light that you can change colors and attach to group contact folders or particular contacts to blink in a certain color(this silently allows you to know if someone called without needing to open up or log into your phone)
•Can program your phone to vibrate to the rythm of a ringtone and set intervals for silent notifications(gotta jailbreak your Iphone for something similar)
•Can lock contact folders with password, can send out group mail BCC, can easily group mails from contacts to their own special group folders.

I mean some of the stuff above you can do either by buying and app, hoping you find a quality free app, and or requiring your to jailbreak your Iphone.

Don’t get me wrong, Iphone is a great phone, and yes, I have one too. However, it is missing a lot of common sense functionality and it makes me wonder sometimes if the people at Apple actual have a pulse on what’s out there really understand. They could learn a lot from looking at the Japanese cell market.

  • goodsense

I feel Iphone is meant to loot people in a sophisticated way. It is a flop product lust did not last long as people realize the product has used cheap material so it breaks and leaks just like producers and managers mind for the company. I wish they get sued

  • goodsense

they are cheaters. Product is meant to loot people and used the cheapest material

  • lol

goodsense apple iphone is not that cheap and doesnt break that much one of the only phones i kno that you can throw against a wall or on the floor and it doesnt break or damage granted the phone cancrash quite abit but apart from that the fone is cool

  • erhai

Yes you can turn it off you zoon of a teef!

  • STi Boy

A lot of the stuff mentioned is just superfluous. I mean really, who actually needs a barcode reader? And external lights (which undoubtably decrease battery life while the phone is in your pocket or otherwise out of visual sight) to let you know who called? WTF? Have we become so lazy that we can’t bother to open up our phone to see who called? Making your phone vibrate to the beat of a ringtone? Really? Who cares?

The features mentioned that anyone gives a sh!t about (cut/paste, A2DP) plus some other 100+ features not mentioned (push notification, MMS, landscape keyboard, etc.) are being addressed in 3.0.

As for things like waterproofing and camera resolution are going to require hardware refinement, but with new models coming out every year or two these things seem reasonable to expect in future models.

Plus, it has to be mentioned that the US has ALWAYS followed Japan with regards to technology. Just take the video games industry for example. The US is always a year behind Japan in regards to Japanese manufactured products (Playstation), and in some aspects even futher behind in regards to US manufactured products (Playstation had been around for 10 years before the Xbox was produced).

Bottomline is that US labor is expensive. It isn’t that companies (Apple in this case) aren’t paying attention to what is being done in Japan. You can rest assured they are. It’s just that domestic production makes it cost prohibitive. Again, going back to the Xbox example. Why did it take one of the biggest software manufactures in the world ten years to release a console? Aside from the fact that Microsoft dealt in software and not hardware, it was because the market was not big enough for Microsoft to be able to produce a competive product. After the huge sucess of the Pkaystation 2, the market had proven capable of supporting the cost of production of the Xbox. Was the Xbox ten years behind the Playststion 3 when it was released? No? Why? Because Microsoft WAS paying attention to what was coming out of Japan.

So when the market proves that it can support production costs, we will start seeing similar features in our domestically produced phones.

Are you cracked? I want to see your iPhone after you throwit against the wall. I’ve been fortunate enough not to have broken my iPhone (although I did have one stolen only a month after I bought it), but a friend of mine broke his screen by letting fall from his lap to the floor. So I doubt you can throw an iPhone against a wall and have it survive.

  • Bigfinger

I have owned every type of phone and smartphone thats been on the market in the past 5 years and the iPhone is the best mobile device I’ve ever owed. That being said I still have a 2nd line with my blackberry bold. Because apple in all it’s wisdom couldn’t develop a phone with decent camera and I travel year round. I still think if blackberry would get off it’s butt it could make the best phone on the market. Granted the storm sux (I switched to verizon for a few weeks to try it) but the bold is incredible. The point of my ramblings is that I am not a fan of any one phone over the others. The iPhone is lacking in too many areas AND so is every other phone on the market. As long as u morons keep praising inferior devices they’ll keep making them that way. I’m not happy that I own 2 phones to do what 1 phone should do and as soon as 1 phone does it all and does it well then I’ll be a fanboy and ready to argue.

actually sprints 4g is using wimax which is going to be very bad quality compared to verizon and AT&T’s upcoming LTE 4g networks. I would go in to more detail about how crappy sprints 4g network is going to be compared to Verizon and AT&T but I’m strapped for time. long story short sprint rushed with there 4g and went with the cheep wimax system which is going to be very crappy. the LTE 4g system is quit superior compared to wimax.

Solution: Don’t go to that website. Big12sports or whatever. If you have an iPhone just do not go. Stick to every other website in the world that can be loaded in 2 or 3 seconds. On any phone. No one cares about big 12 sports except for @sshole country bumpkins anyway. iPhone users will probably survive without their big 12 sports fix. Probably.

  • raver_returns

Doesn’t break? Let me know the next time you want to throw your iPhone against a wall. I’ll be sure to have a new screen, digitizer, and housing there waiting. I repair iPhones in a steady stream for people, some of which say that it only barely took any kind of hit at all. Knock on wood, I haven’t broken my own yet, but you must be crazy if you don’t realize just how fragile these things can be.

  • swimmer

I just tried loading the website big12sport.com using only the 3G on my iphone and it only took me 18 seconds to fully download.

  • HaroldFukker

This Harold character really strikes me as the worst kind of IDIOT. You know the kind, the ones that are the product of an unholy union of brother and sister, a complete redneck. Not only have people debunked his claim of an 8 second download by showing that the pre caches pages and it will obviously load faster the second time around, but if firefox on a real internet connection with piplining turned on takes longer than his claim, there is no F**king way that it loads in 8 seconds over a cellular data network. I know I am not the only one that knows Harold is Full of SH*T and an @sshole but I just figured that people really need to call him what he is. an @ss goblin. Probably wasn’t breast fed and now gets his pretty feelies trying to get people to believe in the fantasy world he has created for himself. The day that any Palm product beats an apple product will be a very HOT day in Heaven or if you prefer a Cold day in Hell. Directly to You Harold which I am sure in not your real name. Get a fucking life. I take the time to let you know that it is sad to see someone who has your delusions. You don’t have to like apple, in fact you can like Palm as much as you want and for some people (you) they are ok. But to actually go and find a thread that is for discussing iPhone firmware releases and start in on people the way you did makes you the worst kind of fool. If you do this on a regular basis, you must have no life at all, live in your mothers basement, and be addicted to the internet and making yourself look big when in fact you probably have very very little intelligence at all is the only gratification you get out of life. If you hadn’t been such an ID10T on the thread, I might actually feel pity for your but you were and ID10T and I don’t. It might be more productive for you to find a discussion on the pre and then tell all those people that your website test loaded in 8 seconds. Fanboys of the pre might actually believe you and then be disappointed when they shell out the $$ to get one and test it for themselves. Get yourself some real help. Just in case you need a pointer, grab your nearest yellow pages and look it up, its under psychologists.

you are all a bunch of homos you people are the reason the internet sucks

  • Deeno

iPhone is the greatest. Stop hating because your stuck with the palm. Have mommy & daddy buy you an iPhone to shut your trap.

  • Brian

No one really knows, outside of the Apple bigwigs, it’s possible that they may not even know. June 9th would be my guess. Apple wants to get the product out before the convention and they all but always release their new product on a Tuesday.

  • Joey

Palm Pre = G1, all hyped up until the release then fizzle’n'fade

  • keith

The new iPhone will be released on June 17th. google next generation iphone. it will give you a good idea of what it will look like and some of the differences. Might I add that’l you’ll all probably love the illuminated apple logo on the back.
