Mobile Phones On London Underground: Plans Frozen
By: Peter Chubb | March 17, 2009 | Leave a CommentTransport for London (TFL) has announced that they have frozen its plans to offer a mobile phone service to the millions of passengers that use the Underground service every day. A trial was conducted on the Waterloo and City line, and the results were not credible enough for enabling passengers to use the mobile phone service.
A spokesperson for Transport for London said that it is technically possible to allow travelers to use the mobile phone service on the deep levels of the Underground network, but the project cost would be huge to implement.
The high cost will also put network carriers off, so mobile phones on the tube will not be something we are likely to see any time soon. Research has been going on since 2005, and took just two years to get the trial started, seems a shame that we are no closer to a solution.
