Cisco’s Unified Computing Server Strategy: Reviews mixed
By: Peter Chubb | March 17, 2009 | Leave a CommentThe news that Cisco Systems (CSCO) wishes to have a unified computing system strategy has been met with some mixed reviews. Competitors have claimed that Cisco will be locking out open systems choices; they will require its own Data Center Ethernet connectivity.
There are those who see that this is a bold strategy towards the next-generation data center. Savvis, a beta tester has said that the system works just how it should do, but the jury is still out. There were a number of companies who were originally interested in this idea, as it cuts across all parts of the date center.
Cisco has a number of competitors in the networking business, and many of them have now been voicing their biased takes. Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) looks to become one of Cisco’s biggest competitors in rebuilding data centers, and they too had a lot to say on the subject. I did like one of the quotes that Jim Ganthier, HP’s vice president of Infrastructure Software and Blades said would you let a plumber build your house?”
