Xbox 360 and PS3 have Apple TV-like abilities: Will Apple game?
By: Peter Chubb | March 16, 2009 | 1 CommentWho would have thought a few years ago that Apple (AAPL) would have had so much success with gaming on a phone, but that is the reality with the iPhone. Apple’s gaming success could now make its way to our living rooms. Apple have filed for a set of patents for a Wii-style wireless controller, showing that there is more to come from Apple TV.
This could mean that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 (MSFT) and Sony’s PS3 (SNE) have some more competition. The patent filing shows an icon for Safari, along with some images that looks like an iPhoto-like app. The filing for a remote wand to control the media applications is proof enough that games could be appearing on this device.
Apple TV is a powerful device and does not work to its full potential, so gaming on the device certainly makes a lot of sense. Just think about this, we have seen how big the app base is for games on the iPhone, now just imagine how cool that would be in your own home with surround sound on, bring it on Apple.
