Vodafone to offer DRM-free tracks via mobile phones

Vodafone (VOD) is to start selling music without any anti-piracy protection; this new deal will allow users to listen to songs on any digital device. Vodafone have confirmed that they have signed deals with some of the biggest record companies.

Those companies include Sony Music Entertainment (SNE), Universal Music Group (UMG) and EMI Music. Vodafone will now be able to offer tracks without digital rights management. Music companies have been eager to sign new digital deals, as online piracy is a huge drain on their revenues.

TheView has said that digital recorded music have been compensating for the decline in physical sales for the first time, the mobile phone was the preferred choice by consumers. Vodafone have said that customers would be able to download over one million tracks, and that pricing will depend on each market.
