
Bill Gates World’s Richest Person: 30% decline in billionaires
By: Peter Chubb | March 12, 2009 | 2 CommentsForbes has released its latest list of “Richest People in the World” and Bill Gates has regained the title as “Richest Person in the World.” Bill Gates lost $18 billion, but still managed to regain the top spot. There has also been a 30% decline in the number of billionaires.
Last year there were 1,125 billionaires in the world, now there are just 793. Bill Gates, now 53 has a net income of $40 billion with his main source of income coming from Microsoft. However, Gates stepped down from his day-to-day duties at Microsoft, so he can devote more time to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The organization assets were $30 billion in January; Gates has now increased his donations to $3.8 billion, which is up 15% from 2008. The Foundation is dedicated to fighting hunger in developing countries, as well as improving education in America’s high schools.
