Before we get started on this hands on review of the Griffin iTrip Auto FM Transmitter and Car Charger for iPod & iPhone, I would like to point out that I have tried a device similar to this. There were no wires, it just plugged into the bottom of my iPhone and iPod, the result was not that good so I have an open mind on this product.

The packaging of the iTrip Auto is pleasing on the eye, and makes it easy to view the product. The Griffin iTrip Auto allows you to not only listen your iPod or iPhone in your car, but it will also charge your devices as well.

I have now taken the gadget out of its packaging and it is surprisingly light, and iTrip Auto’s large, easy-to-read backlit LCD screen makes it easy to see. What I do like is the power unit that plugs into the cigarette lighter of your car; it has a push power button on top, which adds a bit of quality to the device.

The iTrip works by broadcasting your music wirelessly to your car’s FM radio. Getting started is easy, just plug your iTrip into your Apple iPod or iPhone and begin to play some music; you won’t be able to hear any music yet. Plug the iTrip into your car’s cigarette lighter and press the SmartScan button.

In just a few seconds, the SmartScan will find an available FM frequency, then tune your car radio into that same frequency. This can also be done manually, if you want to try to find a better frequency.

I can now hear my music from my iPhone being played through my car radio and I must say that I am surprised. The quality of the music seems a bit lower than if listening to my radio or CD, and I notice a slight bit of hissing. I have now turned my engine on, just to make sure that I do not get any interference. The good news is, I can now listen to my music stored on my iPhone, the Griffin iTrip Auto FM Transmitter certainly seems like a great device to me.
