Apple’s successful business line and possible games console

By: Alan Ng | March 4, 2009 | 2 Comments

An article over at hiphopgamer.com has fueled the speculation that Apple are planning to enter the console market. Since they begun to offer games via the iPhone / iPod Touch many feel that the time is now right for Apple to step up and become a serious competitor to Sony and Microsoft.

The story which can be read in full here explains the reasons why it is a smart business move for Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) to enter the console market due to a few main reasons. One is because of the current media interest they are gaining from various games developers due to their innovative iPhone games. Secondly is because they have the knowledge of knowing how to be successful with a product, just look at Macs, iPods, iPhones, iTunes for prime examples.

Could the games industry benefit from another huge company entering the scene? Judging by the current state of the economy, the answer could be simply ‘no’ as we all know Apple are not a charity when it comes to delivering price points for their products. On the other hand though, another console to go head to head with Sony and Microsoft could be very interesting indeed. Let us know your thoughts below.

Apple doesn’t usually enter a market to compete on established terms. Thus, I do not expect them to build a game console that strives to be the fastest, most powerful machine. They do like to leverage their technologies, however. I can see them expanding into gaming on a modified Apple TV. This would encourage game development as well as sales of an existing device that could become a more compelling family entertainment center.

Yet another unbelievable article from a short sighted neophyte. Apple has built two rails (iPhone and iPod) and the train (App Store) is loaded and coming down the track to arrive at the station platform (market take-over). Anyone who can’t see it is both blind and deaf.

If anyone thinks that you need a big box tethered to your TV to play games, they haven’t understood miniaturization of electronics and likely own a huge tower PC rather than a laptop. The platforms for gaming (iPod Touch, iPhone and even Apple TV)have been built and the players are already buying it in droves.
