Xbox 360 with Blu-ray: Would you upgrade?

By: Peter Chubb | March 2, 2009 | 6 Comments

I love the Sony PS3 and the Xbox 360, but I do think that the Xbox is still lacking in one area. The loss of HD DVD was a huge blow to the Xbox 360, and many thought that Microsoft would then have to admit defeat and use the preferred format, Blu-ray.

Since the demise of HD DVD, Microsoft have been adamant that they will not use the Blu-ray format, instead they will much rather offer their users digital downloads through Xbox Live., or Experience as it is now called.

I do not want to anger any Xbox 360 fan, but I do think that the Xbox 360 needs a Blu-ray player. The question is would you upgrade if Microsoft offered you the Blu-ray player upgrade?

    I think I would…But I already got a PS3 AS my Bluray player.
I prefer the games and controller on the 360 though, By far.

Being honest, adding blueray to the 360 wont give Microsoft any more benefits other than a bullet point taken away from sony.

Sony being one of the key blueray members would also get revenue from Microsoft if it was implemented and this would mean if microsoft still beats PS3 this gen, then Sony still wins by revenue from 2 consoles.

Games will also stay at DVD, future games wont be made for Blueray because it will be going against the 28 million 360 owners

A poll like this is pointless, Microsoft regards Blu-Ray like a terrorist organization and will not pay the ransom(Blu-Ray royalty) nor give into demand(run Java on Xbox).

There is zero possibility of Blu-Ray in Xbox 360 or Xbox 3, Microsoft would rather invent its own disc format based on HD-DVD(Microsoft has royalty-free access to HD-DVD tech) than to go Blu-Ray.

Um… am I the only person that remembers cross-platform HD disk players? The XBOX 360 has numerous advantages over the PS3, why not add an industry standard HD player to the mix. Then i can get rid of my dvd player, current xbox, and be able to watch HD live or Netflix instantly.

I think Microsoft is missing the boat here. I don’t know if the consol needs a blu-ray player, but they should come out with an external blu-ray player.

I’m one of those people who likes to watch the special features on the discs. Microsoft’s streaming content strategy completely disregards that aspect of the disc format. Plus, I often buy movies that I really like so I can watch any time I want. I don’t want to pay each time I want to watch movies I like.

Why doesn’t someone figure out a way to put a blu-ray drive into the current HD DVD player for the Xbox360! Problem solved!

Ok, so although hd-dvd was a semi failure with the people, and the companies, I think XBOX could in the future benefit from making the primary drive a HD-DVD drive for the sake of future HQ and possibly 3D quality games, kicker would be that the HD-DVD would also be able to play BLU-RAYs! I know for a fact that there are several Blu-ray players out there in the international market, that can also play the old HD-DVD disks that people invested in before it's demise. So Microsoft would benefit from PS3 playing people switching, and also future blu-ray wanting people who already loved the XBOX line of consoles. ____OR! microsoft could work on an even better format, that stores more than a Blu-ray disk to get the jump on all competitors, have even better game storage, offer backwards compatibility, and be ready for new tech such as glasses-free 3D or holographic like real 3D.____Either Way, i've got my XBOX 360 w/ Kinect and i love it sitting ontop of my BD-LIVE Blu-ray player.
