Stem cell creation and some ethical news
By: Peter Chubb | March 2, 2009 | 1 CommentResearchers have said that they are now one-step closer to creating stem cell treatment without the need to use embryos. A UK and Canadian team have been working on a way to do this, and what they have done is truly amazing.
The team have managed to manipulate human skin cells so that they can then act like embryonic stem cells. The team have done this without using viruses; this makes it much safer for use in humans. The cells were reprogrammed by the insertion of four genes which are then removed once the process is complete.
This new research is in its early days, but even so, it is a huge step forward. Stem cell use has met with much controversy; campaigners have complained that it is unethical to destroy embryos for the use of science.
