Playstation 4 (PS4) News: Development, specs and features

By: Daniel Chubb | January 30, 2009 | 5 Comments

If you asked a thousand Sony PS3 owners if they thought that the Playstation 3 had achieved at least 70% of its potential I am sure nearly all of them would answer no.

The PS3’s CELL may never get fully used before the next Playstation console is released. Now the Playstation 4 is something most PS3 owners would not want for a long time and we are sure will not be needed for a while yet.

Although today we have some PS4 news that may shock some gamers and also make others happy. Gaming Front has posted some leaked information about the PS4’s development, its specs and features.

This so called “leaked” info claims that the PS4 will use the existing CELL architecture, if this is true then it either means that the CELL is truly more powerful than the 360’s hardware or Sony have a game plan that includes a CELL SDK.

Read the leaked info and more about the development of CPU-Cell B.E. here (this information was translated from Japanese so bare with it).

This news is for the coders who know full well that the new chips on the market are scaleable and multi core, Meaning that the chip will comform to the code. All the coders busting their backs to learn skills for the (Cell) know that it adds nothing to their resume. Hardware solutions for software problems. The PS4 with the Cell is little more than a please dont jump ship move by a company that should never have gotten into the chip business… adding value to a broken chip (these skills are good for years) ie PS4. This isnt a choice its business 101.
The 720 and Wii2 will have these new chips…bet on it.

I think what you have to remember is that the Cell isn’t only being used in PS3′s. IBM use it in Servers, Sony & Tosh are using it in TV’s etc. In fact the Cell BE was a joint venture by Sony, Toshiba & IBM.

Anyway, back on topic! I’ve seen this spec a few months ago, and it would seem that they’re probably gonna add some more cores. The text mentions 24 and 32. Though that seems quite high. Although Intel are currently showing off their latest kit dubbed the V8, which is two Quad Core Xeon processors. So in about 3 years or so when the PS4 is expected, maybe 32 cores won’t be so farfetched.

I believe that there is currently a push for open source standards, at least for Sony and Google. OpenGL ES 2.0 will be supported by the GPU in a PS4 allowing for easy ports from to multiple platforms. The CPU is not a major factor in higher resolution next generation platforms.

Following through on Sony as a multi-media company and the design of the PS3, the PS4 should support the next generation resolution and that looks like 4K. In the news are a few items supporting 4k as a standard during the life of the PS4.

    1) Japan to have broadcast 4k by 2015
    2) Sony is part of several organizations supporting 4K editing, conferencing and a network standard for movie studios to support 4K movies transportation over the internet.
    3) Marseille Networks Demonstrates 4K-Over-HDMI, Fueling Quad-HD Device Design. It's a test bed for next generation 4K blu-ray players expected for 2012
    4) China has created it's own 4k broadcast standards with the help of fabless Korean firms for receiver. It's currently on hold because Northstar pulled out (Satellite provider). China is currently trying to put up their own 4K satellite.
    5) Multiple companies have been showing 4k Monitors at CES.

The above stands in the face of just about every expert in the US saying 4k is 20 years away.

4K with 2 times the resolution of 1080P has 4 times the pixels of 1080P, which is still not fully supported on the PS3, seems like a pipe dream to many of the US developers but GT5 was shown (by a Japanese company) in 4K resolution using 4 PS3s networked together with each responsible for a 1080P tile. So 1080P from a Japanese developer when most games on the PS3 are 720P or less and they show 4K resolution.

Cost for a 4K GPU processor is the deciding factor and I expect the current shelving (read on hold) PS4 development is a wait for a cost effective next generation GPU. Just as with the PS3, a PS4 may not have many games supporting 4K but a few might achieve something between 1080P and 4K with upscaling to 4K.

4K blu-ray will require 2X the video buffer memory in a 3-D player and a faster blu-ray drive. The PS3 can display 4K with firmware update ( Sony sells a Cell BE and RSX 4K editor) but probably can't play a 4k blu-ray movie (due to a 2X blu-ray player) but downloadable clips, display pictures, 4K home movies etc. yes. Also shown at CES 2011 was a consumer 4k and 3-D camera.

    So for a PS4, a GPU supporting OpenGL, 4K resolution supported, 4-6X blu-ray player.
