AMD Phenom II vs Intel Core i7: Benchmark tests revealed

AMD have not had a very good 2008, as they lost more ground to rival Intel, but AMD hope that with the arrival of their Phenom II, it will help them take the fight back to their rival. The new CPU has been launched to do battle with Intel’s Core i7 processor, so how does it perform in an all out fight.

AMD are using the 45nm manufacturing technology, as this will increase clock speeds of the Phenom II, as well as reduce power consumption and in turn reduce heat. This new processor from AMD outperforms the Phenom processor by at least 15 percent.

So we know that the AMD Phenom II is much better than its predecessor, the bad news is, the Intel Core i7 still beats it in every benchmark test. The cheapest of the Core i7 range is the 2.66GHz 920, which costs about $600. This beats the 3GHz Phenom II 940 Black Edition which sells for $520 by at least 10 percent.

I think the New Intels I7’s Are an awesome Chip. However This New Amd Phenom 2 impress me while still slower the thing to Look at is Bang For the Buck. If the Intel Big Dog Chip Beats The AMds Big Dog Chip By 10% but costs over 4 times as much more is it worth the extra money for performance that i really might not be able to see?

Huh? the Core i7 920 cost 600$ and the AAMD X4 940 Cost 500$, thats only 80$ difference and its the “little dog” of Intel.

I can’t wait for the AM3 cpu’s to be released, although it may not add much performance, it should drive down the current PhII’s. I’ve read somewhere that the PhII 940 BE can outperform the i7 920 in some tests, or at least match it (most of the time it gets beaten), so for a gamer or mainstream computer user, the AMD looks a way better choice, u don’t have to buy ddr3 ram and if u have a AM2+ board, u can just slip her in and away u go.

And the best news is, it usually beats the core 2 q9***

(btw, i’m not an amd fanboy, i’m using a pentium 4 extreme, i’m just excited about this upgrade i’ll hopefully get :D)

“The cheapest Core i7, the 2.66GHz 920, which you can get at retail for about $600″

Actually, 920 is being sold for $289.99 on Newegg.com

i7 920 was on sale at microcenter for 199.00

Now you can have the Phenom II 955 which beats the core i7 920 for under $180.00. Also for the same price with the Phenom II you will can get the top of the line mother board with lots of features, where as with core i7 you have to stick to the budget boards.

To me the Phenom II is the winner, since it has really stired up some competition. Already we have seen the giant Intel with its monopoly market share reducing prices on its CPUs again. Go AMD !! hehe

No matter what brand name you buy and support, AMD is just flat out the best thing ever. The reason I say this is that it has made Intel push their products to be better as well as push the cost of their processor down. I use both AMD and Intel products and I got to say I love seeing them compete and giving me a product I can afford and use with out limitations.

  7. in our office (seattle architects) we’ve been waiting for AMD to take on the i7 - this seems to be the ticket!

architects need loads of video (for 3d) processing - thinking of designing a couple of machines to compare.

  8. what is the next thing in CPUs? - is there any chance of intel coming out with a new technology soon? we’ve been eyeing nvidia’s GPU setup.

I must confess i am an AMD fan boy. only because of the simple reason that started with pentium processors. Intel is ripping money away from everyone just because their processors outrun AMDs. Most of the times with the money spent with Intel processor you can just buy an AMD one with a higher speed and save some bucks. At the end we need to consider many several factors that could change a PC speed up or down, likewise, HD, GPU, etc. I believe AMD is doing a pretty good job and the same thing applies to AMD/ATI, just have a look on the new benchmarks for HD5850/HD5870. Why pay more if you can get a similar one that works exactly the same way and most of the cases at the same speed? You guys can throw stones at me but I have made my mind about my favorite CPU Manufacturer and thats AMD. ;-)

I’ve built 5 computers through the years. the first was Intel and all AMD since. The only reason is value. I mainly us microsoft office and play FPS games. and mainly COD WaW. My phenom x3 8450 was able to over clock 20% and stable. My HD4830 video card was overclocked to yield a stable 28% increase in fps with COD. Turns out that the HD4830 is an underclocked card. think about it… Once you get past the marketing, you see whats really going on. AMD doesn’t want to have a lower price faster chip. Intel would crush them if that happens. they need each other as it prevents others form coming into the market, not to mention a monopoly. My new rig, being delivered today is an fx board, PhII x2 550BE. great value for me. plus I bought another HD4830 to run in crossfire which in COD will beat a 4890 stock and overclocked will beat a stock 4870×2 as COD happens to be one of those games optimized for dual video cards. Nice!
